It’s now been 4 days since the voters of Wisconsin spoke. Uncategorized gov walker wisconsin recall voteAs i continue to sift through the tea leaves, I haven’t come up with anything beyond by initial reaction which was the following: 1. If you can out-spend your opponent 7, 8 or 9 to 1, you can do two things. Make your opponent a lot more disliked. If you are equally disliked, you can still win an election by a large margin (7 points, in the case of Gov. Walker).

Wisconsin Republicans Rethinking Shared Governance in University of Wisconsin System

Speaking Of...

At a meeting of the Regents today, Representative Robin Vos suggested that the Wisconsin Legislature Republican caucus is rethinking the faculty''s role in governance on UW System campuses, out of a sense that they are keeping the System from being "nimble." Reducing faculty power in favor of increasing the administration''s relative power could make college less affordable for Wisconsin students.

The Unintended Consequences of Ending Shared Governance

Speaking Of...

As I wrote in my last post, efficiency-minded legislators are raising questions about the role faculty play in decision-making on campuses across the University of Wisconsin System, and whether shared governance represents an expensive and wasteful practice. It seems that without the cost-savings generated by shared governance, college would be even more expensive for Wisconsin families. shared governance University of Wisconsin-Madison Robin Vos college costs

Then came the mandates about closing down businesses which were not essential.

And all that poor Governor Christie had done, was to use a perfectly correct term. What went wrong? How is it there are times in public speaking when using the correct words can be fatal to your message?

New Evidence on Need-Based Grant Aid

Speaking Of...

This is very similar to what my team is learning from studying a Wisconsin grant program. They also find that the impacts of need-based aid are strongest for students who did well in high school but are below the cut-off for the Florida Bright Futures grant, again mirroring findings from Wisconsin. Critically, the authors also note that most students got this need-based grant just once-- as in Wisconsin, many lost it between the first and second years of college.

That's what generates the strategy. And research is what non-lawyers like yourself can do.
