Your Op-Ed Goes Viral With Contrarian Angle

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Since it went out there in cyberspace, it has been viral. Recently, the major news story in the distressed legal sector was this: BigLaw was awarding associates record bonuses, at least the largest since the industry crashed in 2007. All media picked it up. The influential The Economist took a contrarian approach. That tilting toward the contrarian has helped it build and grow its thought leadership positioning in the media.

The Blog Post Went Viral: A case study

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

First of all, let me tell you what likely no SEO expert will:  There are no formulas for why one blog post will go viral and along the way pick up links from brandname media and one will wither with about six page views.    That process that will culminate in a digital item's going viral starts out with an alert eye for what's offbeat in a certain sector or niche.   Minimalism goes a long way to viral.

THE DAILY CALLER - When its content goes viral

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

On the web influence comes only one way:  When a piece goes viral.  For a conservative web publication, THE DAILY CALLER  is amazing in its graphics, tone, and content.    Tucker Carlson has become a digital migrant.    But that's not enough to make it a force of influence.    That makes it quoted, deconstructed, and championed or opposed.

The New Public Speaking - Prepare One-Liner, Forget Rules

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The new ways to do that, observes The Wall Street Journal , are to prepare a one-liner which will go viral and to forget the rules. Sure, it's important to connect. But, in public speaking that won't be possible unless first you get their attention. The specific reference was to the Democratic debates. That one-liner will have to bounce all over social networks. If the speaker is lucky that will become his or her signature.    Rules smules.

But it’s not a viral video. Back in 2007, I quickly tossed up a YouTube instructional video. It took me about a half hour to make the 4:46 minute video. Today, the video will reach its 2 millionth view. It’s not hip or trendy. It didn’t get a big spike in viewership and then go away. It was meant to be helpful, and at least a few hundred people a day still watch it. And I still receive a ‘thank you’ for posting it almost every day.

Sometimes a blog post read by a few thought leaders with power to make things happen will accomplish more for the client than a tweet which goes viral.  In general, clients of public relations agencies want constituencies to take action.
