Another challenging venue

I recently wrote about some oddly configured conference rooms I've presented in, and here's the latest interesting venue, from last night: This is the new event pavilion at the Ventura County Museum. The pavilion has a state-of-the-art new projection and sound system and will be a great venue for large engagements.

Presentations in Non-Hotel Venues

Great Public Speaking

When you are speaking at an event that is NOT in a hotel setting, you must pay particular attention to making sure you have everything you need to make a smooth event. Here's a brief checklist of things that may not be available if you aren't in a hotel: *Projection Screen *Flip Chart *Extension cords *Power strips *Ice *Refreshments, coffee, juice, water, etc.

Presentation Skills: Tough Venues

Great Public Speaking

I've been diagnosed with PTVD -- Post- Traumatic Venue Disorder. As you get more experienced you'll learn to use your pre-program research to recognize potentially disastrous venues before you agree to speak. But sometimes, even with the best of preparation, you get blindsided and have to present in a lousy venue. What is a lousy venue? I would call this a lousy venue, wouldn't you? What I want to get through to you is that bad venues will happen.

Rehashing old content at the same venue?

Speak Schmeak

I spoke at a conference last week, where the keynote speaker rehashed several significant and memorable stories that she had used the year before at the same conference, but in a breakout session. The conference attracts many of the same people year after year, as it's local and sponsored by an organization on the campus of UCSB. It actually annoyed me that I had heard most of her talk before, and at the same event.

Suicide Venues Like Aokigahara, NYC Tall Bldgs - Should They Be Part Of Tours?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

For reasons scientists can't completely understand yet, there are suicide hubs. In Japan, it's the Aokigahara forest. There 500 suicides are known to have occurred. Probably there have been more. A favorite method is hanging oneself from a tree. In New York City, there are two. One is leaping from a tall building. That's either by climbing to the roof or gaining access to a window on a high-enough floor. The other is to check into a medium-priced or better hotel.

Getting in the Green Room - The Zen of Surfing and Speaking

Green Room Speakers

Tuesday, September 29, 2009 Getting in the Green Room - The Zen of Surfing and Speaking I originally decided to call my company Green Room Speakers because of its theater definition: From Wikipedia: A green room is a room in a theater , studio , or other public venue for the accommodation of performers or speakers when not required on the stage.

Six straightforward speeches then facing up to a problematic presentation

Nick R Thomas - A Public Speaker's Blog

Public Speaking Tip #467: If you are speaking in a bar at a venue such as a Conservative club, do bear in mind that the lighting may be quite dim so you will need to speak from the best spot you can find under a light. I was struck by the fact that, despite being such a small place, the Woodfalls area actually has at least three different venues where groups can meet. These have been pretty successful overall, really no different from speaking in other types of venues.

Presentation tips involving locations and lighting, theatres and a theme.

Nick R Thomas - A Public Speaker's Blog

One of the great advantages of working in venues like this is that you will have the assistance of the theatre's technical crew and I must thank Elgan Howells for sorting out the lighting for where I would be on stage at various points during the talk and ensuring excellent sound. Public Speaking Tip #463: If you are speaking in a theatre, let the technicians know your requirements - this isn't a luxury that will be available in most other venues! Redhill and Reigate U3A.

Public speaking from the Staines snowball to confidence-boosting in a cafe!

Nick R Thomas - A Public Speaker's Blog

I was met at the station by two members who acted as human sat-navs to walk me to the venue (something of a first!). Public Speaking Tip #482: Tailored local references in presentations can also include somewhere nearby that you passed through on the way, not just the location of the venue itself. Now I have found cafes to be fantastic places to write in over the years but they are perhaps not the most suitable venues for presentation skills training!

Dealing with a creaky stage

Location of, and directions to, the venue. Estimation of time to get to the venue (accounting for traffic at that time of day). Telephone numbers of contacts at the venue. Soundcheck of microphone and sound system at the venue. As public speakers, we should be focused on our audience and the material. The last thing we want is to be distracted because we’ve overlooked a logistical detail.

Arrive at the venue early. If it’s a really important presentation, try to get there the day before as well so that you can check out the venue and ensure that all equipment is working. This is an extract of a training session that I present “Putting the POWER back into PowerPoint”. Nowadays, many of us use PowerPoint for our presentations.

I don’t attend conferences where speakers don’t get paid

More than PowerPoint...

The conference venue makes money — but the speakers don’t? If they aren’t, I’ll ask if the venue or organizers are getting paid. If the venue is donating the space — I’ll consider going. But if the venue is getting paid and the speakers aren’t? I give up. Starting today, on #EqualPayDay — I won’t pay to go to business conferences where speakers don’t get paid.

Being There, Before You’re There

Manner of Speaking

Recently, João posted photos of the speaking venue at the upcoming conference on the District 59 Spring Conference Facebook Page. Seasoned public speakers understand the importance of being familiar with the speaking venue prior to the actual event. But in today’s world of long-distance travel, we often do not get to visit the venue until the day (or even a few hours) before.

As well, there is space at the bottom to add the title of your presentation, your audience, the venue and date of the presentation. Last year I wrote a post about logistical items that speakers should remember for a speaking engagement. Reader response was so good that I created an addendum. To put these ideas into a more practical format for you, I have reworked the checklist into a single-page PDF file. Items are grouped by category and there is space for you to add your own.

Toastmasters District Message

I guess I have spoken in strange venues. In this message, presented to District at Toastmasters Club Officer Training, held on 20 June, 2009 I discuss how the young average in Africa (19), and the troubling economic times provide a huge opportunity for Toastmasters in Africa, and in particular in Southern Africa. It is a message of growth for our organisation. Excuse the background – the training was in a ballet hall!

Are you prepared for anything?

Craig Strachan - Keep Talking!

When traveling to conference venues, you pass through many environments were equipment can mysteriously disappear. Travel with as little equipment as possible (it also makes the traveling easier), and ensure in writing that the conference venue has the necessary equipment. As a speaker, there are many things that can go wrong, and potentially derail your presentation. It is not a case of it something goes wrong, but of when it will go wrong.

PowerPoint wishlist – “mini master slides”

Craig Strachan - Keep Talking!

So for example, imaging that you your presentation has 10 slides containing a map of South Africa, each of which highlights a FIFA 2010 world cup football venue. Now, the traditional approach would be to have everything on a single slide and to use a lot of fancy animation to make each venue highlight in turn, or to create a single slide and make 9 more copies. Master slides in PowerPoint provide a very effective mechanism for all of your slides to have a similar look and feel.

Prepare Your Speaker’s Toolbox

DeFinis Communications

Know your venue. Have a sheet with all pertinent contact info for the venue where you are speaking. Include your contact’s name and cell phone number, the venue address, and room name. By now, we all know that practicing your presentation and working on key public speaking skills will make you a better presenter. But practice and skill aside, there are other, more tangible, things that will help you excel at business presentations.

The Future of Email and Why You Are Ahead of the Game

SpeakerSue Says...

Whether the purpose of your email is to persuade people to choose your venue, drug therapy, location or solution (over so many others that look the same) or do something else you want them to do, the key is to ensure they feel positive about themselves and the idea. My friend, Dan Burrus, is really smart. He is a “technology futurist and disruptive innovation expert.” It’s a mouthful but when it comes from his mouth, he makes it all make sense.

The venue could have a sub-optimal or non-negotiable room layout. S**t happens. Two little words that while vaguely profane, sum up most of the misfortunes that befall and befuddle presenters. I don’t normally advocate dwelling on the nature of what can go wrong, but for the purposes of this post, it would be helpful. The audience could be scarily bigger or depressingly smaller than expected.
