Sacred Cow #10: Web Site Addresses Are Helpful

Thoughts On Presenting And Design

When use of the Web became popular, URLs started invading slide decks. The problem with putting URLs in your slides is that though the intent may be noble, the end result is the opposite of what was intended. On the second slide, we have a list of URLs. Leave the URLs and links out of your slides. Tags: Presenting Slide Design handouts links sacred cow urls PowerPoint’s been around longer than the World Wide Web easily by a country mile.

Put a YouTube video in PowerPoint

PowerPoint Tips

From the URL text box, copy the URL to the clipboard. Paste the YouTube URL that you copied. In the URL, delete the text watch? In the URL, replace the = (equal) sign with a / (forward slash). You’ll end up with a URL that looks like [link]. You can embed a YouTube video into a PowerPoint presentation. For example, your company may have videos on YouTube that you would like to show.

Add a QR code to your presentation

PowerPoint Tips

The code contains a link, usually to a URL. Then you use a QR reader app on a smart phone, which scans the QR code and displays the URL as a link, so you can visit the page. Do you put your website’s URL on your first and last slides? You may have a few options but basically you enter the URL and download the image. Then, the URL that was set up appears on the screen. By now, you’ve probably seen QR codes in many places. You may even have used them.

Digital - Shifting Traffic Patterns

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

There, our blog URL is converted to a LinkedIn one. On Twitter, our blog URL isn't converted. There are those of us bloggers who repurpose our posts on LinkedIn Update. There is where the action, that is the heavy traffic, is happening right now.    Of course, we still need our blogging platform to post the original content. But, if we want a shot at lots of page views, we will create a catchy headline, line up a photo, and put the link on LinkedIn Update.

How to store your presentation in the cloud–for embedding, collaboration, or marketing

PowerPoint Tips

Tip: To share a large file that’s too big to e-mail, upload it to SkyDrive, get the URL and e-mail it to the recipient. That person can then click the URL to download the file. You can share your presentation in 2 ways: Give people the URL so they can see the presentation online. You’ll see the presentation open in your browser and its URL in your browsers address window. Copy that URL and send it to people via e-mail.

Citing a Blog Post

The Communication Blog

Retrieved from Blog URL. A number of people—most recently a student from Malaysia—have asked how to cite a blog post. Generally, I think this should do it: For APA style: Last name of author, first initial. Date of publication—year, month, day). Title of blog post. Web log post]. So, if you were citing a recent post from my own blog, it would look like this: DeVito, J. 2013 April 30). Interviewing exercise. Web log post]. Retrieved from htpp://tcbdevito.blogspot.com.

Third party URLs are being deleted because of their unreliability. Although this system requires extra clicks for those using a digital edition, the lack of permanence seems to have been the deciding factor in eliminating all URLs except those of the publisher. When citing a website article as a source, the organization, college, or agency rather than the URL is given.

Independent Content-Providers - Having Your Own Social Media Sites Gives You Edge

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The smart money is now asking us, when we apply for assignments with them, for the URLs of our social media sites. Increasingly, there is an expectation that the job entails increasing the exposure of what we write for their sites by repurposing them on our own. So, if you haven't set yourself up on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+, your own blogs, and more, you could probably be at a competitive disadvantage.

Source URL. That last field is a calculated field, meaning it takes the license, credit, and URL fields and creates a string of text for attribution that you can use in your slides when attribution is required. As we design more and more slide decks, we inevitably create or consume an ever greater number of images, whether they’re photographs, icons, or whatever. The problem is, however, it becomes a problem keeping track of them all on your hard drive.

5 principles for easier and faster slide creation

PowerPoint Tips

For a sales webinar, don’t use a URL until you’re at the point of making your offer and then — of course — use only the URL of the sales page. I recently made over some webinar slides for a client and I can honestly say that the slides were the most messed up of any I’d ever seen. It wasn’t the content; it was the way the slides were created. Now, my client was a PowerPoint newbie, so it wasn’t really her fault.

Create a video zoom effect from photos in PowerPoint

PowerPoint Tips

I inserted this URL into the page hoping that the video would embed, but can only get the URL to appear. You’ve probably seen videos which are just a series of photos that zoom in or perhaps move a little. You can create this in MovieMaker or a similar low-end video editor but you can also do it in PowerPoint. It isn’t difficult at all, since you’ll cycle among only a couple of animation and transition effects. You can then output it as a video.

The jolly tech expert in the store recommended I purchased a tech subscription service.    The price was right: $15 a month. The terms and conditions were, well, wonderful. New survey: How people are using Twitter at conferences

Speaking about Presenting

Only 41 people responded to the survey (the url for the survey was circulated using twitter and the conference hashtag). Some academics have written a paper about tweeting at conferences (thank you @tonyramos for tweeting about it). I’m more impressed that somebody would write such a paper, than by the paper itself. The paper reports on a survey of tweeters at five different conferences. The methodology of the survey seems a little light.

Personal Blogs: Everything changes

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

More and more prospects for assigning us work and employers who could hire us want to know if we have a blog and what is the URL.  Like being on LinkedIn and Facebook, a personal blog is, more or less, a must.    Since blogging is a mature medium and the web pulsates with content, the challenge is to come up with ideas which give search and discovery engines incentive to connect with us and readers coming back.    We can't settle into a routine.

Instead they go straight to search engines or ask the URLs for our blogs. Sure, prospective employers and organizations hiring us for contract assignments still request samples.   But, you might have noticed that more and more often they don't.  Yes, our blogs have transmuted into our online portfolios. And we can multiple their impact exponentially by linking the content of each post to a Tweet.
