The Stock Market - Folks In Tucson, Arizona Didn't Notice

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

All through the weekend, when the stock market plunged more than a 1,000 points and as talking heads speculate how bad or not so bad it will get, my social and professional circles in Tucson, Arizona never mentioned what is transfixing metro centers around the world. After only 17 months here, as a refugee from the New York Metro area, I still don't understand how Tucson, AZ can be so different from so many pockets of extreme angst.

Macy's Versus J.C. Penney - The Story At Tucson, Arizona Mall

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Here at the Tucson, Arizona Mall, Macy's and J.C. You can't sell, at least not to Everywoman, unless you are providing an extreme bargain. Penney are based in the same section. As I drive in, Macy's is on the left, J.C. on the right. I always head right. Once in J.C. I gleefully endure long lines to get into the dressing room and to then check out. On those lines other shoppers and I gush about the deals. During the summer, for an onsite assignment I needed new clothes.

Here's What's Happening In Tucson, Arizona: Snow

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

First it was  cold.    Gloves, scarf, plus coat of course, cold. I thought to myself, "I moved across country from everything I knew on the East Coast for this kind of frigid weather!"  "  Then, tonight, a few hours before the end of 2014 the snow began. Big fat flakes that stuck on cars.    Snow.

Tucson, President Obama, and the Political Discourse

Public Speaking Advice and Commentary

And he gave a healing sermon-like talk that was truly dedicated to the victims of the Tucson massacre, that celebrated their lives and uniqueness, and that reminded us all of the best that is in us even as we were contemplating the worst.   Two nights ago, President Obama did something extraordinary.    He gave the best speech of his presidency to date.    He rose above the politics of the day and asked us all to do the same.

Anti-Semitism Lite - I Was Taken for Jewish in Tucson, Arizona

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Then, I emigrated from the New York Metro area to Tucson, Arizona. Here in Eastern Ohio, which is even more affordable than Tucson, I fit right in. Anti-Semitism seems to have returned to the supposed melting pot: the U.S. Yesterday, there were 11 bomb threats targeted at Jewish Community Centers (JCC) reported. The U.S. had provided the opportunity for so many Eastern Europeans to begin a life of religious freedom and economic opportunity back in the early 20th century.

You Thought You Were So Smart Relocating to Tucson, AZ - Financial Joke on You

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Tucson, Arizona used to be  the affordable and desirable place to relocate for retirement and various versions of downsizing expenses. Back in April 2014, a large, that is 440 square foot, studio apartment at Tucson's Vista Montana complex went for $400 a month.   Retirees and the semi-retired who pulled up roots in the Northeast or West Coast for the low-cost lifestyle in Tucson now find themselves in a financial pickle.

Chevy Cobalt - From Empty To Full, $18.32, Fry's, Tucson, Arizona

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Roger, Tucson, Arizona. Okay, I did have Reward Points From Fry's (One of Kroger Supermarket Brands). Those totaled a 20-cents discount per gallon at Fry's gasoline pumps, on 1st Avenue and E. But, still, even without it, I would have filled up the empty tank of the Chevy Colbalt for less than half what it had cost last April when I filled up on Foxon Road, in New Haven, Connecticut. For those who love details, the total sale today was $18.32. What does that mean?

Landlord Nation - Rent for Studio Apartment in Vista Montana Complex, Tucson, AZ Starts at $560

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Take the Vista Montana complex of about 100 units in Tucson, Arizona. As more rent instead of buy, it's increasingly Landlord Nation. The most painful aspect of that is escalating pricing for rentals, even for apartments not in major metro areas. The location is noisy, with lots of traffic to the Fry's supermarket and gas station. Behind the liquor store nearby the homeless often sleep by the dumpster. Overhead, helicopters churn night and day searching for the bad guys.

Landlord Nation - Shocker at Weidner's Vista Montana, Tucson, AZ (bring along something to wash the walls)

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

There, at least in Tucson, where I lived in   Vista Montana , owned by   Weidner , for 27 months, property managers don't have to renew your lease.   Better yet, since property in the Tucson area tends to be affordable, you might consider buying. So much for the American Dream. We have evolved into a nation of renters. For example, in 2014, more than   70 percent of Millennials   leased.

117 Degrees Predicted for 6/19/16 - Is that "just Tucson, AZ" or global warming?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Tomorrow, weather experts predict, it will be 117 degrees here in Tucson, Arizona. But now I am finding out the current heat wave is not just part of the Tucson, AZ tradeoff. "It is no longer a question of whether 2016 will be the hottest on record, but by how much." " - Tom Randall, Bloomberg, June 16, 2016. Here is the article. Is this just part of the deal I entered into when I relocated from the New York Metro area to the Southwest in April 2014?

World Market, Tucson Mall - ID Demanded For Credit-Card Use In Vintage Americana

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The Tucson Mall in Arizona is one of those vestiges of Norman Rockwell times. Everyone is friendly. Prices are affordable. And most of the stores there welcome our four-footed children. Last Christmas I purchased all my gift cards there.    Next holiday season it will be different. One store my dog, Lily of the Valley, and myself won't be purchasing at is World Market. A shocker: Yesterday, the clerk at check-out demanded ID with my credit card.

129+ Degrees in Locations in Kuwait, Iraq - Not Much Cooler in Tucson, Arizona

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Here in less-exotic Tucson, Arizona, the temperature this summer has reached more than 117 degrees.  It's the heat. And we human beings are totally undone. It's amazing more of us are not being shot in road-rage incidents. Yesterday, after the driver in back of me honked, once we stopped at a light I struggled for control. What I wanted to do was get out of my car, walk to his, and announce that I didn't have a gun but that I wished that I had had one.

Small Talk - Why So Much Of It In Fry's Supermarket, Tucson, Arizona

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Roger, Tucson, Arizona, I don't scan the lines to see which one is the shortest. In Fry's Supermarket, on First & E. After shopping there for 16 months, I know to estimate which one has the most small talkers. They come in both sexes, all generations, and convinced the events of their daily lives are interesting to the check-out clerk. Of course, that holds up the line. One middle-aged man explained in detail how his thumb became injury.

Angst about the economy and presidential election was lifted. For that 90 minutes. Much of the Zapeda imagery was from the beauty of desert life. At least as she and her family experienced it years ago.

Tucson, Arizona - No, Seekers of Inner Peace, Affordable Living, Low Crime and Good Weather, It's Not Necessarily The Promised Land

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Tucson, Arizona was presented to me as Paradise: Low cost of living, great weather nine months out of the year and scenic beauty.  Tucson is about a 90-minute drive from the border of Mexico. My rent, car insurance and haircuts are less than they had been in Tucson. I left Tucson after 27 months. Tucson's scenic beauty tends to be a monolith.

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Here in Tucson, Arizona, the temperature on Thanksgiving Day will be about 80 degrees. Not that we haven't had a few nippy days now and then since late October. Two days in a row I had to turn on the heat for several hours. But, in general, the snowbirds who are arriving back here have no complaints. And, of course, there has been no snow. Nor, is any expected. The children here only are acquainted with that entity from Christmas movies and STEM classes.

At the Woods Memorial Library, Tucson, Arizona, I am 500th on the waiting list. The frenzy to gain access to "Go Set a Watchman" by Harper Lee documents that the book business is not dead. Unusually Warm 2/16 in Tucson, AZ - I almost feel guilty not suffering New York Metro cold/snow/ice

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

At one point this afternoon, it got so warm in Tucson, Arizona, that my dog refused to walk. I had to carry him home and try again after it cooled down. That was unusual for this area in mid February. But not unwelcome. The winter had been atypically cold, so much so that all I could hear in this apartment complex was our heating units working overtime. After two years away from New York Metro, I still feel guilty not being part of the collective suffering during the polar vortexes.

Just as I experienced at the art cinema theatres in Madison and New Haven, Connecticut, the audience was mostly Baby Boomers like myself. The film was the sci-fi "I Origins." The restaurant industry is likely nervous.   Airbnb could disrupt it, just as it is doing in the lodging business.  In a pilot program in San Francisco, Airbnb is trying out matching cooks with those who would like to enjoy a home-cooked meal in a private setting.   Here is the coverage in Bloomberg Business Week.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, there have been 867 incidents in real life. Here is that report (link provided by Rubino). Oh, horrors, members of Generation Y and Z might think. We from the Baby Boomers and Generation X know that hate crimes will flourish wherever there is unequal power.

The Guardian focuses on the popular destination for retirees and those who want to shift down to semi-retirement: Tucson, Arizona. Think about it: After being cooped up in an office in a Manhattan or Los Angeles high rise for 30 years, who wants to be cooped up in a air-conditioned house or apartment in Tucson? Also, because of the migration to Tucson of the middle class in California who can't afford that state rents seem to be going up.

Brand New York City - Only for Those with "Real Money"

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Where I had re-located - Tucson, Arizona - is also less and less affordable. But Tucson is not longer Paradise in the Desert. For instance, at Vista Montana apartment complex in Tucson, a 440 square foot efficiency had billed at $400 a month in 2014. However, that truism also is extending to myriad metro areas such as Tucson. Brand New York City is evolving into a living symbol of the 21st century Gilded Age.

Cloudy, With Lots of Green - There's No Place Like Home

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

My journey from Tucson, Arizona to my new home in Ohio near the Pennsylvania border was, well, to use that cliché, the perfect storm. One takeaway from my three years in Tucson: I am an east coast girl. For example, I left my laptop and attache case at a Motel 6. Two hours out, the manager called me. Of course, I had to drive back. I got a flat. I got caught in the highway traffic jams from hell in Arkansas.
