Capturing details in a speech: a musical reminder of failure

Max Atkinson

So the first challenge was how to transcribe the lines spoken just before bursts of applause in the speeches. I started by trying to capture such details by trying to transcribe syllables, words, sentences and phrases on the different lines and spaces in the staves of blank musical manuscript paper. One was that it was far more time-consuming than doing the transcripts in Our Masters'' Voices - which took well over an hour to transcribe each 10 seconds of speech.

Another idea is to have them transcribe their calls or use a program like Dragon Naturally Speaking to have their voice presentation turned into text. Last week I received a call from a sales manager whose team we worked with last year. He wanted a presentation skills “refresher” for his salespeople because their presentations were getting “sloppy” again.

Walk and Talk: give it a try

More than PowerPoint...

With Google Docs Voice Typing on my phone, my words were instantly transcribed into a document. I went for a walk in the park. As I walked, I talked. I attached an $11.99 lapel mic to my phone, and talked for four minutes straight. When I got back to the studio, I had a 552 first draft. And only one error. Basically, I talked my way through an idea I had been wrestling with in the office. The idea was going nowhere, so I took a walk. . And you know what happens when you take a walk.

Here's what I shared in the week just past: Transcribe and learn: TED needs volunteer transcribers for TEDx talks. Fans of The Eloquent Woman on Facebook see links to good reads, resources and id eas from other sources there, in addition to posts from the blog. But you won't miss a thing, since I'm summarizing that extra content and putting it here on the blog for all readers to see.

“The Few”

Manner of Speaking

The entire speech is too lengthy to transcribe here , but I would be remiss if I did not at least quote the part that inspired this post. Last week marked the 70th anniversary of one of the most famous speeches in modern history. On 20 August 1940, Winston Churchill addressed the British House of Commons and delivered his epic speech to honour “The Few&# — the Allied airmen of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) who fought the Battle of Britain.

Gwen Davis: But, how will her business do

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

However, nothing big has been discovered to transcribe into bullet-proof formulas for making a startup reach the breakeven point and go on to real profitability. During the GoDaddy Superbowl commercial Gwen Davis quit her job.   Here you can see that again since you've probably already viewed it with 100,000 million others.    Davis is following the American Dream of owning her own business. In her case it will be making puppets.

Turn a presentation into a report or e-book

PowerPoint Tips

If you have a recording, you can have someone transcribe it for you. You might find it valuable to create a report or e-book from a presentation. While you may be familiar with creating handouts, you might want something longer or more structured. For example, you might want to include a table of contents and a cover. You can then make the e-book/report available for download, or even print it. It could become a valuable marketing or training tool, for example.

Yes! I Want You to Write Your Speech!

Speak and Deliver

Wing the speech, record it, and transcribe it. Even that, ladies and gentlemen, is just another way to trick you into writing it, or at least reading what your transcriber put down to get your mind working as a creative editor. I was working with a new client this week, and got the question I so often get from new clients: Do I need to write out my speech?

Shatter Your Writer's Block Pt I: Speechwriting in Reverse

Speak and Deliver

So when I have the opportunity, I''ll practice a speech from an outline (real or mental), record it, and then go back and transcribe, edit, and prepare it for prime-time. Transcribe it. I don''t know what to write! You''ll have to Google James Caan/Misery to find out what he''s actually typing. A common malady among writers, it is a shared obstacle between writers of prose and writers of oratory.

If you are having a service transcribe your talk video, be sure to direct them to include ums, uhs, and ers. Otherwise it's standard practice for transcribers to omit them, and you won't learn a thing. Yes, that's right: A time-honored way to erase your ums is to have the transcriber leave them out.) A practical way to advance your speaker skills also is often overlooked: Quantifying your performances as a speaker over time.

Turning Republicans and Democrats into Americans: a talk by Mickey Edwards

Speak Schmeak

I''ve transcribed a couple of his shorter stories below, in case you don''t have time to watch the whole video. I may be biased, because this speaker in this video is my uncle, former Republican Congressman from Oklahoma Mickey Edwards, but I really enjoyed this talk based on his book, The Parties Versus the People: How to Turn Republicans and Democrats into Americans. What I enjoyed most about the presentation are his authentic, conversational style and his storytelling.

Give your speech aloud FIRST, record it, and transcribe it. So glad we're in the computer age. Source: Library of Congress Last week, I encouraged all of you to Write Your Speech. But, what if you don't Write Like You Speak ? Many, if not most of us, do not automatically write like we speak. We write like we were taught in school, or like the authors we read most, or with so much extra thought that the words on the page would overwhelm even the wordiest of speakers.

Public Speaking: Really Look at the Results to Improve

Great Public Speaking

By reading your transcribed messages instead of just listening to your own voice, you will find it easier to eliminate unnecessary content, sharpen faulty grammar, and rework key phrasing. When you are speaking in public, don't be so enamored by the words coming out of your mouth that you forget to eliminate those that are not necessary. Few people are upset by speeches that end a little early.

Six Tips for Working with an Interpreter While Public Speaking

Duarte Blog

Transcribe or write out your talk. I spoke in Beijing on Saturday, and worked with an interpreter for the first time. Public speaking is hard enough, and working with an interpreter complicates things… unless you’re prepared. I had two interpreters. One was the primary and the other was a secondary interpreter, plus they had two on stand-by (paranoid event planning I guess).

It's not something speakers often think about, unless we are in a timed speaking situation, or desperate to sit down and shut up.

The Eloquent Woman

Transcribed: There's nothing like a transcript to help you see how you really talk during a presentation. I know, I know. You hate watching video of your speeches and talks. You deny that they exist on the Internet, so others won't look at them (like that works). But if you're lucky enough--and I do mean lucky--to have a video recording of your speech or presentation, it can be one of the best learning tools you'll ever have for improving your public speaking.

The Fed chair's speeches are transcribed and published routinely to aid in that tea-leaf-reading. In America, the chair of our central banking Federal Reserve System (known familiarly as "The Fed") speaks frequently, but with care. Pronouncements by the Fed chair--currently economist Janet Yellen, the first woman to hold the post--are read like tea leaves for signals of change in the economy, and hold great weight.
