Create a tabbed presentation for longer presentations with lots of topics

PowerPoint Tips

When you do a long presentation with lots of topics, you can help your audience understand and remember more by explicitly displaying the presentation’s organization. A visual list of topics helps them relate each topic to the wholeness of the presentation. You can see that I made the Home tab smaller than the others; I did this because I needed more space for the topic names — and wanted to emphasize them as well.

Email Blasts - Be Topical to Boost Open/Conversion Rate

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Smart communicators know to be topical in creating opinion-editorials for third-party media, posts for blogs, speeches, podcasts, and snippets for social networks.    Yet, they simply don't consider the engagement power of the topical in email blasts.   In coaching clients I motivate them to at least experiment with the topical strategy for their next email campaign.

Same topic, two different approaches

Two speakers, same topic. Two presentations: same topic, but different outcome. Here's a visual example of the same topic presented in a bare-bones unemotional fashion vs. an engaging, interesting, artistic fashion: skateboard deterrents. If you have to give a presentation anyway, no matter how utilitarian the topic, why not make it a good time and an enriching experience for everyone, including yourself?

Tough topics, tough audiences

Speak Schmeak

I came across the topic on two other public speaking blogs, so I decided to post a link to my own two cents. Based on my presentation last month to UCSB's Rape Prevention Education Program 's peer educators, I wrote an article for my January newsletter about presenting difficult topics, which often results in difficult audiences, or at least difficult audience members. This seems to be the month to talk about difficult audiences.

The Media - Older, Unemployed/Underemployed Not Sexy Topic to Cover

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Members of the media knew they had a story with legs during The Great Recession. It had been the new college graduates who were labeled "Generation Jobless." " They came of professional age at the worst of global economic times. Many, saddled with student loan debt, grabbed whatever work they could get. And they returned home to live with their parents.    The story still has legs. In The Wall Street Journal Chip Cutter and Lauren Weber re-visit Generation Jobless.

Should women speakers include--or avoid--topics about women?

The Eloquent Woman

Women speakers have so often been silenced in our world history that they deserve the right of self-determination for the topics of their speeches. The radio producer had found this blog and wanted to use it as a muse for a program on women and public speaking. Great news! Could I suggest some famous speeches by women to feature on the program? Why, I have nearly 250 of them in The Eloquent Woman Index of Famous Speeches by Women. All good, right?

Snowquester: Weather as bonding topic

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The sweet spot in bonding with strangers, neighbors, service providers, and even classmates and clients from decades ago has been the weather.    At least since Irene.    As Sandy and Nemo followed, the pull force of concern about the weather intensified. The next storm Snowquester , which sounds like an ONION spoof, could increase that momentum or end it, as communities along the Northeast Corridor develop storm fatigue.

There is no such thing as a dry topic

Speak Schmeak

I've heard from my clients who are engineers, finance people, doctors and scientists that their topics are dry and boring, that their audiences want tons of data, and that there's no way to make their presentations interesting. A topic is dry when the writer or speaker makes it that way. I sat with a client last week who was going to be giving a presentation on cloud computing, a technical topic for an audience who was going to be new to the concept. Download audio here.

Alcoholism No Longer Sexy Topic - But Growing Problem Among Aging Professionals

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

At a 12-step recovery meeting, a newcomer apologized for simply being an alcoholic. "I am a dino, I know," he said. Most of the others in the room were there primarily for opioids and crack. Alcohol had been a side dish. Drugs steal the show because they can be fatal - instantly. That grabs headlines and commentary by politicos. Alcoholism, in contrast, frequently results in a gradual decline, then death from other causes such as liver failure, accidents, or suicide.

How to create blog post topics and schedule posts

Six-Figure Freelancer Blog

Before you write each blog post, you should clearly decide on your topic, which segment of your target market the post will appeal to and what problem or opportunity you will address. And your post should stay focused on the topic, segment and issue. That might mean some prospects will not be interested in particular posts; however, if you try to be everything to everybody in each post, you will end up being nothing to nobody.

A reader asks: "How do I find non-trivial quotes by women on my topic?"

The Eloquent Woman

Or, more precisely, you're seeking quotes from women that suit your topic, but they just seem to be unavailable? I'm going to take this challenge in two directions, offering some women-specific quotation sources as well as some sources focused on the non-trivial topics requested: design, creative process, failure and collaboration. Do you ever get discouraged when you're seeking quotes for a presentation or speech, and all the available gems are from men?

A new kind of online speaker profile: The topic cloud

The Eloquent Woman

I know I just told you about Lanyrd, the "social conference directory" that lets you explore conferences, speakers, topics and more--and better yet, add past and present speeches and presentations (your own or those of others), making it a good roster of experience for speakers. As a result, when speakers tag their topics within sessions, the tags become a "word cloud" on your profile under the heading "Speaks about," as shown in the sample profile at left.
