Wisconsin Republicans Rethinking Shared Governance in University of Wisconsin System

Speaking Of...

At a meeting of the Regents today, Representative Robin Vos suggested that the Wisconsin Legislature Republican caucus is rethinking the faculty''s role in governance on UW System campuses, out of a sense that they are keeping the System from being "nimble." Reducing faculty power in favor of increasing the administration''s relative power could make college less affordable for Wisconsin students.

March Madness and the World Championship of Public Speaking

Speak and Deliver

I just finished sweeping my Area Contest last Friday night, both Table Topics and International Speech, as I make yet another run at a third District Trophy in Topics, and hopefully, finally, a 1st place trophy at the World Championship of Public Speaking (WCPS). When I compete at Division on the 11th, I''ll be facing the fall District Humorous Champion - meaning the two of us hold the last two speaking trophies in District 26, and neither one of us is guaranteed to even PLACE.

Tears while speaking: Lessons from President Obama

The Eloquent Woman

Not speaking was not an option for the president yesterday, but tearing up was--six times in just under four minutes, by my count. Whether it’s an elementary school in Newtown, or a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora, or a street corner in Chicago -- these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods, and these children are our children," he said, but it was his tears that forged the connection in that moment.

When the right words create the wrong message

The Presenter's Blog

How is it there are times in public speaking when using the correct words can be fatal to your message? The political goal of speaking at an RJC event is a simple one: Impress your pro-Israeli credentials on Sheldon Adelson, and the event held at Adelson’s Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas attracted multiple Republican hopefuls. John Kasich of Ohio was there, as was Scott Walker of Wisconsin. That’s why I’m sure this wasn’t a case of Chris Christie mis-speaking.

Does simple=stupid in speaking? Why Congress's report card isn't bad

The Eloquent Woman

Congress speaking at one grade level lower than they did seven years ago, around the sophomore level in high school. And lawmakers of both parties still speak above the heads of the average American, who reads at between an 8th and 9th grade level. In all that coverage, the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune was a rare voice expressing Our view: Congressional speech is easier to understand. If you want someone to understand your message, you speak clearly and concisely."

Fripp THE Executive Speech Coach

My job when speaking is to inspire people to believe they can do something they probably will never achieve - I know that and they don't. Getting books published successfully) Their odds are microscopic with their memoirs of living in Wisconsin and having a sick cat. The specific question is, how does one speak to the 1-3% who will actually apply one's message and not be disturbed by the rest who will not?

CounterCulture 2.0?

In HuffingtonPost.com, Terence Chea reports that rallies took place at colleges in California, Wisconsin, Illinois, Washington state, Texas, and Alabama.  Those I speak with pick up the stirrings of a generational war.  Could Thursday rallies on college campuses to protest education funding cuts be the beginning of CounterCulture 2.0?    It sure seems to have the sense of cause and voice of a new generation of CounterCulture 1.0.
