I'm leaving tomorrow for ten days - half in Portland, OR, and half in the Sacramento area. Visiting friends and family for a much anticipated break! Blog posts will be intermittent while I'm gone, because I have not stored up enough advance posts to keep it up for ten days! See you" when I get back!

The three most popular destinations for them are Sacramento, Portland, and Austin. The ultimate cool was to live in the Bay Area. Everything was there, ranging from geniuses doing their own thing (and becoming billionaires) to breathtaking natural beauty. Everything is still there. But, as Len Ramirez reports , it's no longer affordable. Even elite professionals can't buy a house. Also, two things have been added that long-term Bay Area residents don't like.

My mom had a heart attack on Monday and I've been up in Sacramento with my family since then. Hey everyone! I apologize for not writing sooner. We thought we might head home today, but she's had a little backslide, so we're probably going to stick around for the weekend, or at least until we're feeling a little better about her condition. I hope to get back to the blog next week, but if I fall behind, now you know why. Back soon! News About Me

As I've been driving back and forth to Sacramento regularly for two months (a 6-hour drive), I decided to give investigative reporting podcasts another look, and finally finished "Serial." I finally got around to finishing the original season of the podcast "Serial," in which the case of convicted murder Adnan Syed is re-evaluated in detail by investigative journalist Sarah Koenig. I had listened to the first four episodes on a road trip last year, but never picked it up again.

They range from the Miami Herald to the Sacramento Bee. Yes, members of the media have tremendous power. As least if they can hold onto their jobs. The past few weeks have not been good ones for that. The carnage might be described with that famous line from a history play by William Shakespeare: Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. The latest possible reductions in force could occur at 29 newspapers owned by the McClatchy Company.

As the Sacramento Bee reports, in Judge Troy Nunley's court, the victims recounted how the trauma hasn't abated. From ancient Greek times to the present, artists have struggled to sort out why human beings put tragedy in play. They seem to have it all. Then their actions bring it all down. For some reason, those tragic figures dominate the legal profession. Recently, at Abovethelaw , lawyer-journalist Kathryn Rubino featured some of the worst-behaving lawyers.

In the Associated Press (picked up by the Sacramento Bee), Sudhin Thanawala explains that the mandate to protect pertains to "foreseeable acts of violence in the classroom and other settings connected to their studies and can be held liable for failing to do so." All institutions of higher education in America likely will be conducting meetings with their lawyers, mental health counselors, and chief financial officers.

After ten days of visiting with friends and family, discovering hip Portland neighborhoods and Sacramento vegetarian restaurants, playing with babies, wine tasting, tea drinking, mushroom hunting, apple picking, dessert eating, movie watching, magazine reading and IKEA exploring, I'm happy to be home. Hello readers! I'm back from vacation and ready to rumble.

As the Sacramento Bee reports, as part of the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (SEED), 130 residents will receive $500 a month for 18 months. Stockton, California has seen hard financial times. That included double-digit unemployment and a high foreclosure rate. Those times aren't over: one in four continues to live in poverty.

Those range from Sacramento, California to New Haven, Connecticut. With aging can come lower earnings from work or fixed incomes. But, that doesn't necessarily mean that older people have to become "poor." " One strategy to maintain a middle-class lifestyle is to relocate from urban areas where the cost of housing exceeds the recommendation of consuming only one-third of income.

Sacramento, and Albany also gives us writers a shot at fame, if not fortune. It's self interest. NEW YORK MAGAZINE has a big stake in New York's being very important. So, not surprisingly the publication focuses on that as a cover story. However, the reality is shifting, at least in the experience of us writers. The story we want to be involved in has been happening Inside the Beltway as well as in state capitals.

Side note: This reminds me of a conversation I had with an employee of a Nugget Market up near Sacramento. At the first tasting room yesterday we met Mike, a soon-to-be grad student studying management. His background is varied, from studying at the Culinary Institute of America to serving in the Air Force. Right off the bat, I discovered that his management philosophy is very similar to my public speaking philosophy.

Also known as HK Poet when she's slamming poetry, Peterson plays professional women's tackle football for the Sacramento Sirens. You probably don't think of spoken-word poetry and tackle football as being in the same skill set, but they're both talents of Holly K. Peterson. And at the National Football League's first-ever Women's Summit, held just before the 2016 Super Bowl, Peterson wowed the crowd performing an ode to what she called the "sisterhood of sports."
