Speaking and sport

Because my talks often involve anecdotes about amusing incidents that have happened at other speaking engagements, audiences usually assume that at my next booking I will be telling a story about them! Back in 1998, when I had been a speaker for just a couple of years, I spoke at a WI Group meeting in Oxford. This got a big laugh and the poor speaker realised what was happening and said 'Well, he has to get his material from somewhere!'

April was fairly busy for talks, beginning with an evening booking speaking about The Power of Humour in Everyday Life for the Ringwood Tuesday Club at the town's Conservative Club. Public Speaking Tip #467: If you are speaking in a bar at a venue such as a Conservative club, do bear in mind that the lighting may be quite dim so you will need to speak from the best spot you can find under a light. Nick R Thomas - A Public Speaker's Blog

I was originally booked to deliver my Patrick Campbell talk for the South Wesses Archaeological Society at Bournemouth's Kinson Community Centre on 16 April 2012 but they found themselves needing a short-notice speaker for 5 December 2011. The passing of a famous speaker.

I'm going to publish my 500th Public Speaking Tip in this post but first I will tell you about some recent talks and training. Coaching a club speaker. hour session with a speaker who had booked me for my service offering coaching for Women's Institute speaker auditions and club speakers. As I chatted to members before lunch in the hotel's very good Gilbey's restaurant, there were a number of complimentary remarks about my public speaking, one of which was: "You obviously enjoy it". Public Speaking Tip #382: Speak with enthusiasm - your audience will notice! Obviously a speaker should check to make sure there are no insensitive references in their material which might cause offence - but then that's a good idea with any audience.
