So I'm going to post a three-part series about preparation rituals over the next week and let's see if we can add some layers to your level of preparation. When we think of preparation for a presentation, we think of the usual stuff: have an objective, organize your thoughts, practice it, time it, check out the venue, check your equipment, anticipate Q&A, etc. A preparation ritual is just a routine that helps us prepare for an upcoming task.

Mindset mastery is an ongoing process

Speak Schmeak

Two years ago, I started working with a client who does a lot of speaking, but hates mingling with the audience before presentations. During our work together, he became much more comfortable with joining the group before his presentation, even sitting at the table and conversing while they ate their meal (he doesn't eat before he speaks; nor do I!). He just plain gets out of practice, and not just with speaking, but with his mindset.

One group member talked about how much confidence she had speaking to a room full of students, but wasn't sure she'd have the same confidence in a room full of colleagues or superiors. When she's ready to move onto the bigger weights - speaking to more difficult groups - it won't be easy or comfortable, but she'll pick up the heavier weights and start lifting until her confidence muscles are stronger. A veteran speaker can get "rusty" if she doesn't speak on a regular basis.
