When we think of public speaking, the traditional image that comes to mind is a person standing in the front of a room full of people. However, there are a variety of formats for what can be considered public speaking, such as leading a meeting, making a sales call, participating in a panel or round table discussion, or speaking to individuals at a networking event. At conference tables, on panels, and in other small venues, it can be considered awkward to stand when speaking.

You cannot control the venue; you cannot control the other contestants (short of booing or throwing things at them while they are on stage!); Competitors go one at a time and are evaluated by a panel of judges against a set of criteria. At the District Conference in The Hague , there were seven judges in a room of approximately 300 people. A couple of the speakers that day spent all of their time talking to either the left or right side of the room and never addressed the audience. This just says to everyone in the room that you feel trapped up there. When on a panel, dont look at your shoes. I can’t tell you the number of bad photographs of panels I have because some of the panelists look like they are sleeping or bored up there. After all, 100-1000 people may be in the room.
