Your Visual Package: What The Audience Sees

Professionally Speaking...

Specifically, the visual package you present. Let''s look at the components of your visual package and examine how your audience interprets some of the things they might see. Then you can be sure that your visual package is not undermining your message but rather enhancing it. Photo Credit: flickr.com/Premier Packaging C.C. The brilliance of your message is only part of what an audience will focus on during your presentation. The other part is you.

Make the product unique, not the packaging

Speak Schmeak

My hubby, a marketing manager and buyer for a specialty foods store, was visited by a vendor with a new product, a product that is similar to other products in its category, except for one thing: the size of the packaging, which is a good 1-2 inches taller than the other packaging in the category. Here's my husband's take on the issue: "Make the product unique, not the packaging."

Language - Use of "Disappointment" Positions and Packages You as Sophisticated (understatement is in)

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

" It can damn whomever or whatever is discussed and, simultaneously, position and package the speaker as sophisticated. Although this is a visual era, words still function as public relations workhorses. One of those words is "disappointment." Yeah, wasn't it always a smart rhetorical move in upscale circles to understate. As Law.com reports, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence labeled U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts a "disappointment."

Brand Challenge: Positioning and Packaging Side Hustles

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The challenge is how to position and package those side hustles (yes, plural) so not to risk the day job or core business.  Once unthinkable (or, at least kept under wraps) in professional life was The Side Hustle. The attention was to be focused totally on the day job. That is, there was no diluting the personal branding. That was then. Now, those without side hustles are perceived as putting their financial security at grave risk. The day job can go poof.

Ecommerce - Will It Be Derailed by Porch Package Theft?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

USA Today , as are so many media outlets, presents this problem: the growth of porch package theft. Despite that supposed precaution, the package will be stolen.  The dark side of human nature, not technology, could derail the potential of ecommerce.  According to Xfinity Home, about 30% of Americans report they have been victims of this crime. And, the Denver police note that only about 7% of the thefts haver resulted in an arrest.

Packaging: Without it, most good ideas wither

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The gift industry taught us the power of packaging.  Shoppers leave the store euphoric to be carrying that package in their hands. Yet, too many would-be influentials are ignoring the mandate that they have to package their ideas into what will get the right attention. Then there are those who understand the magic of packaging. Or should have.  Upscale stores such as Sephora usually establish a whole function focused exclusively to wrapping purchases.

Lee Potts, over at Breaking Murphy's Law , pointed out this interesting post on Strategic Guy 's blog about a presentation gone wrong due to the speaker's appearance and alleged lack of preparation. Except that some of the people who responded in the comments were at the presentation and didn't find it disastrous at all, nor did they have a problem with how the speaker presented himself.

Karen Positioned and Packages as a Liberal: The Predictable Saga of Claira Janover

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

It's the continuum of entitlement. For the traditional Karens, the sense of entitlement is that they have a right and downright duty to control the behavior of those they perceive as not being part of their universes. For the reverse image of that there are the Claira Janovers. They, as the Daily Mail reports, seem to feel entitled to impose their views in ways that violate society's norms.

Getting Executive Communications Assignments: Package, don't push

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

And the reason it had occurred to me is that in the past three months I have been focused on how I package my marketing materials. I had decided to try creative comprehensive packaging because pushing had set me up for exploitation. The sweet spot in pitching to a prospect for a book to be ghostwritten is to frame that as a total package.  Yes, we pitch the package.  In this fast-changing world of how books are published, distributed, and promoted, clients are confused.  Often, because they are professionals of wealth, influence, and power, they won't disclose that they know that they know very little about the new state of affairs in the book industry.

The payoff for that particular store is that WalMart studies show that some customers will still enter the store and pick up items they forgot to order earlier.
