The Eloquent Woman

Staying on time--and more importantly, on message--means that each speaker is given a speech written for them, and the use of teleprompters and other technology helps keep the show on schedule, if stilted. You had to wonder what kind of orators these two parents might be raising. The teleprompter version involves locking your eyes on the machine, and forgetting to move the rest of you.

I was wrong about Cameron looking at screens

Max Atkinson

A few days ago, I was recommending that David Cameron ought to do something to improve the way he uses the autocue/teleprompter, and stop looking at one screen for too long before looking towards the other one. I suppose that the reason for my mistake is that we've become so used to politicians using teleprompters that we assume they all do it, and that Mr Cameron's 'naturally' skewed eye contact gave the impression that he was doing it too.

making shifts as a speaker

The Eloquent Woman

Fond as I am of trying new devices for speakers , I know that most speakers come to phases in their learning that require a major shift: from speaking as one of many in a meeting to a solo talk, from small groups to large audiences, from scripted to extemporaneous, or from low-tech to high, as in audioconferencing, incorporating online resources or using a teleprompter. That's a great plan, but may not be practical--so McCain's rehearsing with teleprompters.

On the death of Margaret Thatcher: notes on the evolution of charismatic woman

Max Atkinson

There are no records of any famous female orators in classical Greece or Rome, where the early texts on rhetoric assumed that the practitioners would all be male. Indeed, one of Mrs Thatcher''s major long term achievements may turn out to have been the undermining of age-old assumptions of the sort contained in Quintillian''s observation that the perfect orator cannot exist ‘unless as a good man ''.

Michael Foot's memorable oratory

Max Atkinson

But, although Michael Foot had a reputation for being a very effective orator, it was almost impossible to find any comparable video clips of him using the same techniques, let alone receiving much in the way of applause. To make matters worse, Michael Foot didn't have very good eyesight - and no one in the Labour Party had thought of equipping him with a teleprompter.

Sales, showbiz and speaking

Max Atkinson

With his eyes glued to a teleprompter, and an expression on his face serious enough for a funeral oration, he spoke in a flat and regular monotone that sounded like an audition for the the voice-over part of a speaking robot in a science fiction movie. This post was prompted by an invitation from Angela DeFinis to contribute to her 'blog carnival' on the theme: ' The Impact of Public Speaking on Top Sales Performance '.

04/21/09 | Reported as spam RE: Five Ways to Speak Like Obama Ok, I dont know what speeches youve been listening to, but without his teleprompter, he is not someone that I would try to emulate myself after. Finally, if it were not for teleprompters, it would not be possible for him to speak as eloquently as you have described. 04/21/09 | Report as spam RE: Five Ways to Speak Like Obama It seems to me that the thrust of this article is how to be a better orator.

President Obama's speech at Westminster awarded a B-

Max Atkinson

Sometimes this tremendous orator doesn't pull it off. Obama still lacks Reagan's teleprompter mastery Both presidents majored on foreign policy. But on their respective delivery of the speeches, Reagan's ability to read a speech as though he wasn't reading at all was second to none (not to mention his brilliance at carrying on as if nothing had happened when a teleprompter lets you down ) - and it's one area where Obama still needs to do more homework/practice.
