Become a “Consumer” of Virtual Presenting

DeFinis Communications

In fact, for years we at DeFinis Communications have advocated that our clients become “Consumers of Speaking.” One thing I’ve noticed is that I’m now able to categorize various meeting leaders and presenters, as well as those I’m speaking with casually. Because I am “consuming” speaking on a daily basis, just as you are, I’m able to distinguish between those who are comfortable, prepared, and experienced versus those who are winging it or hoping to get it over with.

Is busyness a competition?

Speak Schmeak

Back in the late 90s, after having started and run my nonprofit organization for several years while also working a full-time job, I started noticing a tendency to brag about my busyness. The busier I appeared and the more meetings and events I organized and attended, the more important I felt. Communication General Comments Not About Speaking Speaking Up For ChangePeople are busy. Payment vs. exposure

Speak Schmeak

Some of you get paid to speak; others hope to get paid one day. That is, we will be invited to speak pro bono, or will be offered less than our usual rate, and we'll have to decide if it's worth it to take less money in order to get exposure or visibility. You get paid to speak.

Is your presentation like a flea market?

Speak Schmeak

But that doesn't mean you can just toss a bunch of old slides into a new slideshow and have a well-organized presentation that makes sense to anyone but you. For example, if I'm talking to entrepreneurs rather than nonprofit employees, I will change slides that refer to building relationships with "donors and volunteers" to "customers and vendors."
