Design an “umbrella” key message for the whole day, and then a key message for each module of your training. For training sessions, break up the session into several modules. To create a non-linear PowerPoint presentation, there are three different ways you can do it - hyperlinks, slide numbers or link to module files. First, design your presentation in modules that can stand independent of each other. Think of how your audience groups the information to decide on the modules (ie. Second, assume that each module is the first module you present, and that the audience has not seen any preceding information.

The topic wasn't new; it's a module that I usually teach as part of my Shake Up Your Speaking retreat. I forgot my stuff. I had a workshop Friday morning, and I thought I was ready, but I wasn't. I had finished my slides, I had finished my notes, I had printed my handouts. I always have my tools in my bag, like my presentation remote, my VGA-to-USB adapter cable, markers and other items I take to my presentations. Except I didn't.

If you start getting answers like, “Well if you wanted it to do that, we could custom program it for you,” or “Yes it will do that if you buy another module from a third party vendor,” or “I think we could get it to do that, but we’ve never had anyone ask before,” then you may be on pretty shaky ground by going with the system or shopping cart in question. Does it have integrated upsell modules? Does it have a “Tell a Friend” module?

If you prepare your presentation as a number of discrete modules you’ll find that adjusting your content to audience feedback will be much easier. In my eBook How to present with a backchannel I recommend that the first time you present with a backchannel, you shouldn’t try and monitor or respond to feedback in real-time (the term backchannel refers to an online conversation taking place at the same time as people are talking live). I’ve changed my mind.
