How do you treat the true friends of the speaker?

The Eloquent Woman

I knew to ask for Jim when he'd stepped out of the room, and he knew--after we'd talked some more--that I planned to roam the room, so he could better manage my mic and slides, and I knew my roaming range and what to do if something went wrong. I get a lot of surprised looks when I hunt down and introduce myself to the slide advancer, the man with the mics, the catering manager or head waiter, the audio guy, the secretary who's handing people packets.

Managing your energy as a speaker: The 90-minute cycle for you and your audience

The Eloquent Woman

You might then need to avoid coffee, make sure you've fueled your body with protein right before you talk, and integrate some physical activity--taking your mic into the audience, getting them to stand up and move for a warm-up exercise, or some other tactic--to keep energy high. Managing your energy levels is vital for speakers who want to be more dynamic and connect effectively with audiences. The tired speaker doesn't perform well, particularly in unscripted exchanges.

Speaking Season 13 of 107

Speak and Deliver

Ive spoken at 100s of venues over the last 22 years, and only used a corded mic, believe it or not, 2 or 3 times. I never fell to ground, but I did stumble once, and dropped the mic at one point. With the leg to boot, I was slowly bending over, with nothing to hang on to, working to not lose my balance and end up on the floor next to the erstwhile mic.
