The Scene: a meeting of a global committee to decide on a new brand. Neat lines of plugs criss-cross his head, with painful looking red welts at the base of each. What are your speaking skills worth to Warren Buffet?

Speak Schmeak

On November 12, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates were interviewed at a town hall meeting by CNBC's Becky Quick and students from Columbia Business School. Toward the end of the meeting, the following question was asked by a student: "What's the one thing that your MBA didn't prepare you for when you got out into the real world?" Okay, so not a very articulate plug for public speaking training, but you get the gist. (

Collaboration plugs critical gaps in your knowledge and skill. This could be in a team meeting or over a lunch break. Ray Adams, a friend, shared this great example. “I always get my boss to review my slide deck before any meeting with senior stakeholders to ensure it flows, is accurate, but most importantly that people will get it first time reading it. "  I looked around to plug in my laptop. About a year after our meet-up, he opened his own transportation business. It was the worst of times.    I stopped at a truck stop half way between Boston, MA and my home office in New Haven, CT. From the get-go, I knew the assignment wasn't for me. And I had traveled all that way, expenses not reimbursed (parking for 2 hours set me back $32), to check out the "opportunity."

This week The Wall Street Journa l chronicled how the work world is sticking it to us aging. About 8 million of older professionals are unemployed or in low-quality jobs. Essentially, age bias is kicking in at age 35. Yes, 35.

Build the audience into your presentation

Speak Schmeak

Last week at my networking group meeting, one of the speakers managed to mention five or six people in the room as he went through his ten-minute presentation. His lighthearted approach also added some humor to the presentation, as his main point was that he was not going to talk about his business while, of course, talking about his business, and plugging other businesses in the process.

UnConference Versus Conference

More than PowerPoint...

Those who present often overtly plug their companies with overblown introductions. No overt product plugs: unless they are pertinent to the presentation. People who speak enthusiastically -- not for the ulterior motive of plugging their wares, but because they are passionate about sharing their ideas. Conversely, if you give a stellar performance, your reward is continuing the conversation with the engaging, delightful people you meet. It's a Conference.

Fortunately, Nemo's father, on his way to save his son, meets a very brave and joyful creature, a female fish named Dory, who soon becomes his Mentor , in spite of her crazyness and very poor memory. Well, women on board meetings can also fall into that trap and would rather remain silent than ask for what they want. Use your 6th sense too, your intuition and plug yourself in your audience.

Breakfast with Clayton

Speaking Of...

I spotted a young man working on his laptop with an iPhone plugged into it. I'm convinced that had to do with the fact that I was unplugged, he had a natural cuiriosity about meeting new people, and he gladly engaged in a real conversation as a break from his graduate studies homework. On a rare snowy day in Dallas I found myself having breakfast at the Dallas Fort Worth airport, in a distant corner of the terminal next to a small Starbucks.

Later in the meeting, he questioned the man's willingness to admit he'd had nothing to do on Thursday mornings for 42 years ( charter member )!

Public Speaking - What to Do When Things Go Wrong

Great Public Speaking

I had a back-up, hand-held microphone with a long cord with me so I plugged it into the meeting room's sound system. The first time I gave the full day seminar associated with my book I had a few MINOR problems. The sound man who had the mixing board, wireless microphone, and tape deck didn't show up. The videographer was delayed with a speeding ticket and showed up 10 minutes before the program was to start. That caused a 40-minute delay. So what did I do?

Speaking Season - 37 of 37?

Speak and Deliver

Meeting #37 was unique. About an hour before the meeting, I ended up on a call with my boss - corporate had made the decision to send a replacement speaker for the rest of the schedule, making my last meeting that night, my last day the next day, to transfer equipment. I was surprised, since they had previously agreed to the Colorado meetings, but not disappointed. Telling me an hour before the meeting though - that put me in an odd state of mind.
