Jed Rubenfeld - Of Course, He's "Comeback Material"

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

As a career coach, so many have been asking me if Rubenfeld is "comeback material." Media outlets have been busy bees chronicling the fall of Yale Law School professor Jed Rubenfeld. But that's today.

Same material, different group

Speak Schmeak

I got a question in my workshop yesterday from a student who has been invited to speak at two different banquets for two different groups of people, and he wondered if he could use the same material for both. We never want to give a canned speech; that is, a speech that you wrote once and continue to deliver exactly the same as it was written to every group you speak to. However, having good base content that you can tweak and customize is a great idea.

Stock Market Puts Coal in Our Stocking - Christmas Miracle of Less Materialism?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The Dow is putting coal in our stocking, triggering a paradigm shift to less materialism? In the U.S., the stock market hasn't opened yet. It's 8:41 A.M. But we expect a whopper of a plunge. Yesterday the Feds raised interest rates 0.25 percent and global stock markets , ranging from China to Mexico, went into a downward trajectory.    Could a Christmas miracle be in the works? It looks like we can only expect less in the near future - maybe for years beyond.

Creatives - If You're In Our Lives, Of Course, You're Material

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Any creative worth his or her salt absorbs every bit of life and retrofits it into material. That might be for a book, article, film, television script, painting, ad, design for a smartphone, or research experiment. That's just the way it goes.    The question is: Should we provide a disclaimer to the people who enter our force field that they could wind up the lead character in, say, my novel "The Fat Guy From Greenwich?"

More Monkey Material

Can You Hear Me Up the Back?

Posts that fit in our ‘Monkeys’ category are like buses - none for months, then a bunch (I’ll ignore the temptation of a banana gag there) come along at once. Here’s a corporate monkey presentation of no educational value at all, though it shows how a drawing can be more interesting than PowerPoint. And Ross Noble discusses why your audience might be watching your lips move, but not hearing a word you say because they’re thinking about a tiny monkey on a bicycle.

Ashton Kutcher - Did A+ Use Others' Material, Without Attribution?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Any Silent Generation or Baby Boomer (former) professor like myself will tell you this: Naive, insecure students have been attempting to take short cuts on producing expository material since the beginning of the university system.   The Daily Dot alleged that material from Buzzfeed, the Huffington Post and Matador Network has been published, without giving credit to the author and the media site.

Corporate White Papers - Should Marketing Material Pass "Peer Review"

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

No corporation can "afford" that kind of time gap on what it intends as marketing materials. Are corporations, like academic institutions, responsible for introducing new knowledge and then share it? That's the elephant in the room in Michael Housman's Tech Crunch article "Why More Companies Should Submit To Peer Review."

Winfrey/Armstrong Interview: Material for mutual comebacks

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

According to the AP source, Lance Armstrong did "come clean" in his interview with Oprah Winfrey on OWN. Only time will tell what the legal implications will be for Armstrong. However, those who understand reputation management know that this interview represents the continuation of Winfrey's comeback.    Her OWN, after floundering, has been picking up in ratings.    Also, she has put together a post-"Oprah" identity.

Imaginative Tex McIver Could Pen Material for "Good Girls" When in Prison

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Perhaps only a law partner would have assumed that he could offer up an oddball story of how his wife got shot. Well, Tex McIver was just that: a law partner at Fisher & Phillips. And, he did indeed present a wild convoluted tale of how his gun discharged and eventually his wife died from the gunshot wound.    The jury, though, didn't buy in. Usually jurors can be relied on for justice.

Andrew Bosworth - He Should Have Known Not to Put Damning Material in Memo

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Memos get leaked all the time. Media and government agencies have become the typical drop boxes. The fun of following Abovethelaw.com is all the leaked documents it receives from unhappy law firm associates. They are authored by pompous law partners.    Memos also wind up as in the discovery process for possible litigation. Even when I was a lowly middle manager in a giant corporation, I was instructed by the lawyers how dangerous putting things in writing is. So, don't do it.

Publib Speaking - Selecting Humor Material

Great Public Speaking

Selection of Material I'm sure you take great care in selecting the educational material you present to your audience. Appropriate Targets You must constantly remember to base your humorous material on an important target shared with your intended audience. The same care should be taken when selecting the humorous comments you plan on including. You must decide who and what to joke about while avoiding being offensive and/or inappropriate.

Learn Public Speaking Material Easily Using Bits

Great Public Speaking

A bit is a section of public speaking material that is so related that it makes it easy for you to memorize. Each point flows naturally from one to the next so you can deliver the information without notes (if you know your material). This person really knows the material.' You will be more likely to practice your material (and we all need practice) if you can practice a three or five-minute chunk rather than the whole presentation.

Subway Rat Fight over Bagel - Great Material for New Reality Show Titled "2 Rats, 1 Bagel"

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The behavior of rats provides fun and sometimes useful insight into how we humans go after what we want or need. The latest installment is this: The push and pull of 2 rats at the 59th street subway station in Manhattan. At stake is breakfast. The best player will get the whole bagel. But smart strategists could each get part of the bagel. And both rats could start their day with something substantial in their stomachs. Here is the coverage by the Daily Mail.

Matthew Muller - Artists Will Always Have New Material for Depicting Tragedy

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

From ancient Greek times to the present, artists have struggled to sort out why human beings put tragedy in play. They seem to have it all. Then their actions bring it all down. For some reason, those tragic figures dominate the legal profession. Recently, at Abovethelaw , lawyer-journalist Kathryn Rubino featured some of the worst-behaving lawyers. The latest among the worst-behaving lawyers is Harvard Law School graduate and former California immigration lawyer Matthew Muller.

On-Demand-Economy Workers with New Niche - Yes, you need separate marketing materials (keep brands separate)

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Employers, temp agencies, and clients hiring on-demand-economy workers want to deal with a simple narrative. It might take the form of: Joe Smith has advanced expertise in content marketing, including all formats and all mediums. He is fluent in English, Spanish, and French. His fee is $35 per hour. A big problem could start for both those contracting out assignments and for Smith if he expands his expertise to another field.

Boom Niche Business in ghostwriting academic material

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Those who operate those ghostwriting factories for academic material recruit the help on Craigslist.  Even if higher education migrates totally online, as it's predicted to do by 2020 , students will still need to produce the case analysis, term paper, thesis, book report, reflective essay, and dissertation.    That's already become a boom niche business for ghostwriters.    You decide the ethical piece.

Milked Material: When does it start smelling sour?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Then, like many successful people, she seemingly started to rest her creativity a bit and milk old material.    Even before the mantra of the era became "move on," Ephron's defaulting to overworked material would have been suspect.  Incidentally, the supposed fresh material about her alcoholic mother is a little late in the genre.  Nora Ephron became a brandname in writing and then in film by fresh takes.

SuperBowl Halftime: Material Girl performs 12 minutes for free

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

There's plenty of incentive for a celebrity to perform for free during halftime on the SuperBowl.    For Madonna this year, it's the platform for her comeback.    That won't be easy since the space she created so many years ago is now inhabited by Lady Gaga. Madonna will be singing the song "Give Me All Your Luvin'" from her new album MDNA, which will be released in March.    Also her new film "W.E." " is opening.

India's Blackout: Great material for U.S. speechwriters/ghostwriters in energy, green

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

What a lucky break for us speechwriters/ghostwriters in energy or any aspect of green.    We now have the dire example of the two blackouts in India to leverage.    Just when we assumed we have reached the end of the line in fresh approaches, there are the 600 million human beings in India sweltering in the inhuman heat.    I tried that out on someone riding the elevator with me.    She remarked, "They are used to it, there."
