Mainstream Media: Volatility Continues

Mainstream media, not the secure place to be.    Yet young people keep signing on as interns at mainstream media.    Volatility continues. reports  that Readers Digest replaced president Eva Dillon with Lisa Starples and in Iowa, Meredith laid off 20.    Some will get lucky.    But most will wind up with serial internships and no paid job at the end of their youth.

Mainstream Media - Infrastructure Crumbling?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Champions of retaining mainstream media [MSM] contend that is necessary to ensure factual accuracy.    This is an arrow in the heart of the push to mainstream mainstream media through government help. Tags: Media   After all, unlike much of citizen journalism, MSM has the infrastructure for cautious reporting of the facts, fact-checking, and the editing process.    Well, those champions might be losing their thunder.

Mainstream Media - Zero-sum game

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

For mainstream media like the News Corp.  In games like Twitter, the game isn't zero-sum.    What Twitter and other digital players create can generate more overall business, not just business for them.    the game remains totally zero-sum.    The eyeballs that Rupert Murdoch is reaching for with his New York section of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL will be eyeballs that THE NEW YORK TIMES will be losing.

Social-media Fatigue: Executives back to buttoned-down bylined articles, op-eds in mainstream media

How do social media such as Facebook, Twitter, texting, etc. However, mainstream media still matter.

In tabloids we trust - Gore story and more

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The PORTLAND TRIBUNE, a piece of the mainstream media, didn't dig into the allegations about sexual misconduct by Al Gore.     The mainstream media and the police frequently cave to the powers-that-be.  In a similar manner, tabloid on the legal world, called  ABOVETHELAW.COM  is doing the kind of deep investigative digging that we might have expected in less complicated times from the mainstream media

Knowledge is power when presenting

The Presenter's Blog

Mainstream media once provided a rich source but today, chasing the quickest buck at the lowest cost, most media outlets offer a diet of celebrity-drenched trivia. When we make a presentation we occupy the space defined by Peter Drucker as that of a “Knowledge Worker”, someone who “works primarily with information”. Our goal is to inform and persuade. Information is the bedrock of our ability to do that.

Boxing Needs To Incorporate Media Training…Immediately

Matt Eventoff

Boxing needs to adopt media training immediately. What is missing, and has been for the past three decades , is the ability to communicate with the media in a way that allows the sport to cross over into the mainstream. Media training can, and would, change that. This isn’t about boxing – it’s about dealing with the media. Media training would have provided him the skillset necessary to handle the post-fight interview.

But I guess every bit of media needs every bit of revenue it can attract in this era when it's a challenge to monetize.  Tags: Media Writing Last week I noticed that alternate free newspaper the NEW HAVEN ADVOCATE had an ad right on its front page.    It was on the very bottom.    But it was there.

THE NEW YORK POST: You bet, we all read it, both right and left

Demand Media - Profitable model for business, bottom-fishing for writers

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Demand Media, which usually pays writers $15 for a well-researched original article, is thriving as a business.    It will do even better, reports VANITY FAIR, if it sells that content to mainstream media. For writers who supply that content, though, that process represents bottom-fishing.    Some writers might consider the arrangement a type of internship where they can build experience and a portfolio.    Nothing wrong with that strategy.

James Somers: Not just web developers in demand

The old-line world of media changes slowly.    Most of mainstream media lacks that hustling gene.    Otherwise, it would have picked up years ago on the digital threat and saved itself.    A sign of that tendency to harden in its assumptions and rituals is that the NATIONAL ENQUIRER did not win a Pulitzer for its investigative reporting of the John Edwards sex saga.    It should have.
