Beware the Stale Mailing List

The post Beware the Stale Mailing List appeared first on Jane Atkinson. We all know how important having a list is to our business marketing efforts. For many of us, myself included, we have been capturing names through lead magnets and other sources and building our lists for years. In fact, my list is almost at 10K names. That means it outranks Daily Mail (50). Daily Mail, on the other hand, tilts toward the sensationalistic. Online traffic is everything.    And when it comes to that the Drudge Report comes in 46th in the U.S. But it also trails Fox (25). The top website or app is google.com. Here are more rankings. The curators at the Drudge Report have a golden gut for selecting the news items which will receive the most clicks.

E-Mail - You Bet, Less Is More

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The "they" are the marketers, politicos and evangelists who flood our inboxes with their e-mail. Usually, at that point, there is an option for fewer e-mails. From the get-go, they should have embedded in their promotional strategy to be highly selective in the number and the quality of the e-mail messages. They know. Unfortunately, they don't alter this annoying behavior until we click on the "unsubscribe" button.

Snail Mail - Powerful Marketing Tool, When Customized

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Increasingly I am recommending that in the A/B testing we experiment with snail mail. The tone should be conversational but the focus on the recipient, not the organization doing mailing. The snail mail functions just as the landing page on a website. Most clients come to me to boost their click-open/Call To Action rate in email. Since the Pony Express, that kind of marketing tool has been effective. The trick is to update the format, tone and text for changing times.

Marketing - Sure, Circle Back to Using Snail Mail, But Be Smart about It

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Snail mail is back as a marketing tactic. That is, don't mail more than 4 times a year.   Should you consider snail-mailing seasons greetings this year? MarketWatch confirms that. So, I shouldn't have been surprised that for my May birthday, I received in my physical mailbox birthday cards from my financial planner and my insurance agent.    Was it effective? Yes and no. I felt better about doing business with my Edward Jones investment advisor.

Zumado Public Relations - Nick Gaffney's Genius Use Of Snail Mail

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

In the snail mail today arrived an oversized postcard. I usually toss snail mail, with the exception of checks from clients and credit-card bills. Why did I pay attention to it? Well, it was hand-addressed to me. There were cool graphics, with a message scribbled on the back. It was from Nick Gaffney who had launched  Zumado Public Relations in San Francisco about a year ago. That message was to thank me for my support.

The Daily Mail reports on the quirky murder-suicide in the Kroecker family in rural Western Oregon. Is the takeaway from this Daily Mail coverage: Home is a dangerous place to be? Snail Mail & Marketing Mix: Why we buy

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

When snail mail came in from State Farm, though, I opened it. Currently, snail mail is so effective in the marketing mix, both B2C and B2B, because it is delivered through a channel that is no longer glutted.    In addition, there's more old-fashioned trust in what comes into our snail mail than through other mediums.  Also, personal items like wedding invitations come in snail mail so we look forward to checking it.

However, only 19% of marketers in the study said they send updates as coupons and discounts in the [snail] mail." Among those leveraging snail mail is Kroger subsidiary Fye's.
