3-D Printing Tutorial at Mahoning County Public Library - Attendees Were All Baby Boomers

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Is it that members of younger generations  already  knew a lot about 3-D Printing ? That's what I wondered this evening at the tutorial on 3-D Printing at the Poland branch of the Mahoning County public libraries. And 3-D Printing was not entirely new to us. For example, 3-D Printing was a wonderful development for inventors. Or, are Baby Boomers determined to stay up-to-date with tech trends?

America's Public Libraries Go Proactive on Funding Pre-Recession - Model of Toledo Lucas County Library's Smart Public Relations

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

That was the public library. Since that time - the 1730s - the public library has become a lot more than books. If the funding is less than needed, then the local library system can deteriorate. One of the best examples of a public library which knows how to tell its story is the Toledo, Ohio Lucas County Public Library.  You bet, the public library helps drive Toledo's economy.

Libraries: Already rebranding as Third Places

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

On November 13th, I might swing by the North Haven, Connecticut Memorial Library to hang out at the "Cooking with Paula" free meetup.  That branch of the CT public library system has become my favorite Third Place. No slouch when it comes to digital realities libraries already have been rebranding as Third Places.  A man I had known for years finally asked me out for a date in the reading alcove at North Haven Library.

Print - Shrinking World but Special

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Its outgoing editor in chief Graydon Carter was known for the glossy print edition of the magazine and the gala Oscar Party (which some perceived as excessive gilded age). And that seems to say a lot: Vanity Fair still treats print as sacred. And, on so many television programs, such as "Law & Order SVU," there are scenes with mothers and grandmothers reading print books to children at bedtime. The print kind.

The Public Library - Building Community, One Special Event At A Time

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Like all library special events, it was free. It's long been said that public libraries are the new Third Places in our society. The public library has been the heart of the community. Since a public library is less and less about print books, we who come in talk. The public library might be the 21st century version of the settlement house.

Toddlers & Books: Miller Public Library, Hamden, Connecticut

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Print books still cast their spell on toddlers.    That's what I have concluded from observing the brisk business at the check-out counter at the Miller Public Library, Hamden, Connecticut.    Pre-schoolers, with their mothers, grandmothers, and sometimes even fathers, check out about 7 print books at a time.    But the excitement seems to be about the print books.

USA Today - Can it make it financially on its own?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The Gannett Company is spinning off its print businesses. Gannett is following the example of News Corp which also separated its print business, including The Wall Street Journal.  The question is if print newspapers and other forms of media such as magazines can make it financially on their own.  I wonder why I subscribed to the print edition of The Economist since it is delivered on Saturday and everything in it is in the digital edition on Friday.

Matthew & E-Commerce: Q4 Could Take Big Hit

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

To notify clients about the status of their assignments, reply to prospects that we were in an emergency, and attempt to get some work done, I had to travel from public library to Barnes & Noble to a car dealership to a Quaker meeting house and back. To pass the time with reading print material, I lit candles and sat close by them. It's access to the Internet, stupid. That could be the biggest victim of Matthew.

Your Tech System Has Been Hospitalized - Before You Go Visit It

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

If not, I will continue amassing 50-minute computer time slots at the public library. It will have tons of downloads to be printed out. That's a billable service, even at the library. The ultimate catastrophe for a small business is this: The tech system requires hospitalization. Sure, there are online services that tend to what can go wrong with tech systems. But there also exist more complex problems that require brick and mortar hospitalization.

Gas @$4.07 (Cash) - Neighborhoods make comeback

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

At the public library all those print weeklies with listings of local activities are getting scooped up fast.  Pay cash and gas is @$4.07 a gallon in North Haven, Connecticut.    Admittedly that station is pretty near a highway so the price per gallon is a bit more.    But the lowest price I found was in Hamden, Connecticut @$3.99 So, no surprise neighborhoods are making a comeback.
