The Epic Keynote - a Review

Speak and Deliver

The only true speaking book I've completed in 2016 is Jane Atkinson's 'The Epic Keynote' - which clearly belongs here! Diving in this book, I was searching for a great keynote 'formula' that would make me look at what I'm doing in a whole new way. The book covers a bit of old ground from The Wealthy Speaker, helping the reader identify the type of speaker they want to be, and who they should target. Like Keynote, you can access more than one template by importing another deck’s slides. Scores: Keynote: 20 , PowerPoint 2008: 17, OpenOffice: 5. Keynote document.

Presentation Zen: 10 non-PowerPoint books that can help you create better presentations

Presentation Zen

I don't usually suggest PowerPoint or Keynote "how-to" books, but instead recommend reading books from various design and communication fields to stretch your knowledge and perspective. Carmine Gallo does a great job of summarizing all the many good things that Jobs does in his famous Apple keynotes, and he provides concrete takeaways. In this post, I want to explore what audience members remember from a presentation, using the first three keynotes of the conference as my examples. I asked as many people as I could what they remembered from each of these keynotes. For most types of presentations, I believe it should be you, the speaker, who decides what the overarching message is. Last week I spent three awesome days at the Presentation Summit.

The  terrorist massacre  at French satiric publication Charlie Hebdo confirms what those of us in communications always knew: Humor is a subversive tool. Introduce and use it with care.

The risk of too much design in our presentations

Dave Paradi's PowerPoint Blog

Just so we are all clear, I’m not talking about large keynote style presentations that have a significant entertainment component. I’m talking about the type of presentations that most of us work on. In these types of presentations, when there is too much design in the graphics and movement, the risk is that it is perceived as slick. So instead of aiming to compete with the flashy entertaining keynote presentations, I suggest you focus on making your presentation clear.
