International Public Speaking: Think Global

Great Public Speaking

Now, it is no big deal to put us on a plane and expect us to address an international audience twelve hours later. A handy and inexpensive source of international background information is the Culturgram published by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies, which is part of Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. The world is getting smaller.

Another handy and inexpensive source of international background information is the Culturgram published by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies, which is part of Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. By far the most comprehensive source of international customs I know of, other than taking live protocol training, is the Put Your Best Foot Forward Series by Mary Murray Bosrock.

What Happens When the Win Anyway Guy Loses? Part I

Speak and Deliver

I had qualified to represent my Division in both Table Topics (Impromptu Speaking) and the International Speech Contest. I've also competed in D9 (Eastern WA, NE Oregon, Northern Idaho), and D15 (Utah, Southern, Idaho, Eastern Nevada). Of the 20 previous contests, I had acquired fifteen first place trophies (8 in International) , 4 second place trophies, and only once failed to place in a contest (Evaluation, 2003), but placed first in a second contest (Humorous) at that conference.

Toastmaster Sunday: Do I Still Get Nervous?

Speak and Deliver

But for Tall Tales, I dusted off a story I wrote about 10 years ago for a Tall Tales competition in Utah - and polished it with everything I''ve learned since then about writing, speaking, performing, humor - and dove right in. Yesterday I competed at my first Division Contest in two and a half years. The nerves hit the moment I stepped through the doors of the conference area at St. Anthony''s Hospital in Lakewood, CO. My stomach cramped up. My breathing sped up.

I Owe it All to Toastmasters

Speak and Deliver

And still, I continued in Toastmasters , in Utah, Washington, and now in Colorado - serving as an officer, an Area Governor, a club sponsor, a club coach, a Conference activities organizer, a TLI speaker - and finally earned my DTM this year. For now, let me wish Toastmasters International a very happy 90th birthday - as long as you''re there, and I''m above ground, I''ll be a member. I owe it all to Toastmasters.

Famous Speech Friday: Elisabeth Murdoch's lecture to the UK television industry

The Eloquent Woman

When Elisabeth Murdoch delivered the prestigious MacTaggart Lecture in Edinburgh on August 23rd, she stepped up to the podium with a lot of baggage she may not have chosen to carry: her gender, her genes, and her business profile in the shadow of News International’s blazing and scandalous wrongdoings. The MacTaggart is the headline performance at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival, the biggest event in the UK television industry.
