How to handle a heckler

Speaking about Presenting

Most hecklers are made, not born. If people don’t feel listened to they will turn into hecklers. So the critical step to avoid making hecklers out of people in your audience is to listen. At the Presentation Camp in LA last year I facilitated a session on handling a heckler. This is the first prerequisite to successfully handling a heckler with dignity. Let the heckler have their say. Reflect back to the heckler what they said.

It''s part of our preparation to know what we would do if we lost our place, the computer shut down, or a heckler challenged us. Most speakers, no matter how experienced, still have the tiny thought in the back of their head: "What if something goes wrong?" Hecklers will be at a minimum and will be swiftly thrown out if they cause a disturbance. In my previous posts regarding Tiger Woods , I discussed how his NOT talking was hurting him. How to handle a heckler. Last week I wrote about the challenge of the third era of presenting: the era of the audience. Kristin Arnold has written a provocative and intensely practical book Boring to Bravo on how to meet that challenge by encouraging audience participation. The philosophy of the book is summed up by this quote from Amanda Gore in the book: When I say, “Use audience interaction,” I don’t mean that you should ask a question and have them call out. You must go further.

I'm not asking if you know how to deal with hecklers or troublemakers in the audience. Last year I attended a conference where one of the speakers was Arianna Huffington.
