Recovering From an Onstage Flop

The post Recovering From an Onstage Flop appeared first on Jane Atkinson. Twice in the past week I’ve had clients come to me and say they thought their presentation went smashingly well, but then the feedback came… and they were wrong. The audience did not love their performance. In fact, some people didn’t even like it a little bit. Yikes! What would you do if you had […]. Your Client's LinkedIn Pulse Post Flopped - Delete

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The potential exposure provided by posting on LinkedIn Pulse can be as great as having an opinion-editorial (op-ed) published in The Wall Street Journal. The potential downside can be equally huge. There is little traffic. No likes. No comments. That data - or the lack of them - are made public on the Pulse site. Your client looks bad. The good news is that Pulse platform allows you to delete. And that's what I recommend. Products fail and are taken off the market.

Have You Done Your Marketing Flip Flop

Speaker Launcher

Have you done your marketing flip flop? Many speakers I run across don’t realize their positioning needs a flip flop. The flip flop is not a difficult switch to make on your website, but if you need a hand, check out my Focus 40 session at a special introductory price. What do I mean by that? Well, they are either positioned as a speaker first, expert second. Or they are making it about them first, and the client second. Let me explain.

I originally posted on this topic in 2008, but it appears it needs repeating! In today’s competitive climate, it shocks me to see that many speakers still start out their home page saying things like “Hire John Doe for your next meeting&#.

Summer Goals, Cha-Chings & Flip Flops

Where I used to be aggressively thinking about marketing and how to ramp up biz for the Fall, now I base the success of my summer on my flip flop tan line. My summer time goal has shifted quite drastically over the past 5 years. If it’s well defined, I’ve done a good job! Is it silly and not very strategic to base success on a tan line? Perhaps, but isn’t the point of having your own business to be able to dictate how you spend your time?

A lot has been written about Mitt Romney’s flip flopping on important philosophical and public policy issues, but does he have a greater problem with the GOP electorate? Perhaps Romney appears too smart, as in the intellectual variety. You don’t have to be Bill Maher (he calls the GOP the “stupid party”) to acknowledge that [.].

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

And that was a flop, both in the evening and late morning. Mostly, the evening television news is dead. Like, they say in sales:  That dog don't hunt. But some of us still tune in. And the majority are opting for ABC. That's because of both anchor David Muir and the extreme sophistication of everything from the selection of stories to scripting/graphics. Muir gives just the right emotional nuance, plus good looks. The aura is enhanced by his total gay cool.

And yet, while he will indeed leave the campaign as nominee, he will also leave it weakened by evasiveness and flip-flopping. The personal characteristics that enable others to believe in us the most, are often the ones coached out of us as being most likely to frighten the horses. The Republican nomination process for the candidate to face President Obama this November, has demonstrated this supremely.

American Conservatism - Rebranding To Become, Well, More American Liberal

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

That's the crude slang in sales about flops in products and services. This dog don't hunt. It also applies to political ideologies. As Jack Hunter observes in Politico , many American conservatives are hawking values that are increasingly unmarketable. To come back to the marketplace with what Americans will cast their votes for in 2016, American conservatism has to rebrand. This is exactly what Bill Clinton had done to be elected president.

Hands hung limply, legs flopped lazily, and there was no energy or effort behind the steps. I wrote a post two years ago about watching some young football players giving their all on the practice field. Two young women stood to the side of the track, practicing a dance routine. Every move was halfhearted.

Who is Your Website About?

Speaker Launcher

Do what I call the “marketing flip flop” and make it about them (your audience, your clients) and the outcomes of your work, and people will be more likely to lean in. Logically, you might think that your website should be all about you, after all, the client is hiring you to speak for their group. That was true 5-10 years ago. But since companies have been put under scrutiny for how they spend their conference dollars, ROI (return on investment) has become more important.

Maybe that was why the film about Steve Jobs was a flop. Some websites have a section on the organization's history. Many of us don't really care about the history of anything.
