Green Room Speakers

In other words, the green room is a place for performers to prepare before they get on stage. Yet I recently learned that green room has a second definition. In surfing , the green room is the inside of a barrel that is produced by a wave.

How about a community center where drum lessons are being given in the next room? I've been diagnosed with PTVD -- Post- Traumatic Venue Disorder. As you get more experienced you'll learn to use your pre-program research to recognize potentially disastrous venues before you agree to speak. But sometimes, even with the best of preparation, you get blindsided and have to present in a lousy venue. What is a lousy venue? Did you ever present in a barn?

Presentation tips involving locations and lighting, theatres and a theme.

Nick R Thomas - A Public Speaker's Blog

The journey home wasn't great, what with long waits on a freezing platform at Clapham Junction only to find that trains were too crowded to squeeze into, then eventually boarding one where it was standing room-only all the way to Southampton - but I wouldn't have missed that talk for the world! Public speaking from the Staines snowball to confidence-boosting in a cafe!

I was met at the station by two members who acted as human sat-navs to walk me to the venue (something of a first!). Public Speaking Tip #482: Tailored local references in presentations can also include somewhere nearby that you passed through on the way, not just the location of the venue itself. Now I have found cafes to be fantastic places to write in over the years but they are perhaps not the most suitable venues for presentation skills training!

I don’t attend conferences where speakers don’t get paid

More than PowerPoint...

The conference organizers will pay for the room and the food. The conference venue makes money — but the speakers don’t? So they’re leveraging their privilege to gain even more privilege. If they aren’t, I’ll ask if the venue or organizers are getting paid. If the venue is donating the space — I’ll consider going. But if the venue is getting paid and the speakers aren’t? I give up.

Avoid Energy Zappers

Humor Power

When it comes to humor delivery and getting good laughs, it’s important to avoid the energy zappers that could suck the energy right out of the room. The solution is to always assume the audience is enjoying your program even if they aren’t showing it. Before I present an Observational Humor monologue at a Toastmasters meeting, I always step out of the back of the room first so that I can do some stretching. An aisle down the center of the room is not ideal.

Manner of Speaking

Take a walk, listen to some music or even find a quiet place to cat nap for 20 minutes if possible. You should always arrive at the venue with plenty of time before your talk so that you can make sure everything is set up and working the way it should. Even if such meetings are brief, they help you start building connections with the audience before your talk. If the audience is large, look at sections of the room.
