Presentation Skills: Tough Venues

Great Public Speaking

I've been diagnosed with PTVD -- Post- Traumatic Venue Disorder. If you are really gung ho about speaking, you're going to jump at the chance to do just about any speaking engagement. As you get more experienced you'll learn to use your pre-program research to recognize potentially disastrous venues before you agree to speak. But sometimes, even with the best of preparation, you get blindsided and have to present in a lousy venue. What is a lousy venue?

engage your audience with new media

The Eloquent Woman

From the start, this speaking engagement posed a number of challenges. It was the dreaded after-dinner talk, meaning I needed to be super-engaging. The crowd was due to number close to 100, ensuring extra work to keep that size crowd engaged. The venue didn't allow for Internet access, eliminating the chance for live demonstrations of any of my examples.

Increase Book Exposure Through Author Speaking Engagements

http://delicious.com/akarrer/prospeaker

Authors who pursue speaking engagements gain more attention for their books. Authors willing to do even a few speaking engagements will develop a loyal reader base and increase their books sales. These ideas are just a few of the many opportunities that can be created for authors to schedule speaking engagements to promote their books. Initially, authors generally will need to speak for free and use each speaking engagement to sell books.

Why you need to take every speaking opportunity

I got to the venue and immediately started setting up. Just think how fantastic it'll be, three or 10 or 20 years from now when, because you chose to take these speaking engagements, you are now prepared for ANYTHING. It's your time now to get speaking engagements on your calendar. Take every speaking engagement that comes your way. Make engagements happen if they're not just falling into your lap. I forgot my stuff.

Zeetings is an easy-to-use software platform that boosts the return on investment of presentations and events by keeping audiences engaged, providing data-driven insights to presenters, and helping people stay connected. It’s no wonder presenters use this technique to engage audiences. The best part is that whilst active participation keeps everyone engaged, you become a more effective presenter through having ongoing feedback. If your topic (and venue!)

Public Speaking Tip #467: If you are speaking in a bar at a venue such as a Conservative club, do bear in mind that the lighting may be quite dim so you will need to speak from the best spot you can find under a light. If you are agreeing a date for a speaking engagement and you notice from your calendar or diary that the date is a holiday then mention it to the person booking you - it will save time for everybody later! One of the great advantages of working in venues like this is that you will have the assistance of the theatre's technical crew and I must thank Elgan Howells for sorting out the lighting for where I would be on stage at various points during the talk and ensuring excellent sound. Public Speaking Tip #463: If you are speaking in a theatre, let the technicians know your requirements - this isn't a luxury that will be available in most other venues! Redhill and Reigate U3A.

Public speaking from the Staines snowball to confidence-boosting in a cafe!

Nick R Thomas - A Public Speaker's Blog

I was met at the station by two members who acted as human sat-navs to walk me to the venue (something of a first!). This continues what I am now calling the 'Staines snowball', a large number of ongoing speaking engagements, all from recommendations, that started with my talk for Staines and District Probus Club in July 2010! Now I have found cafes to be fantastic places to write in over the years but they are perhaps not the most suitable venues for presentation skills training!

A Public Speaker’s Checklist – Free PDF File

Manner of Speaking

Last year I wrote a post about logistical items that speakers should remember for a speaking engagement. As well, there is space at the bottom to add the title of your presentation, your audience, the venue and date of the presentation. Reader response was so good that I created an addendum. To put these ideas into a more practical format for you, I have reworked the checklist into a single-page PDF file. Items are grouped by category and there is space for you to add your own.

Empowering women means paying them

Speak Schmeak

What message are you sending when you write checks for all the costs of your event: the venue, the food, and the A/V staff. After yet another request from a women's organization asking me to speak for free, I wrote this post on Facebook.

I don’t attend conferences where speakers don’t get paid

More than PowerPoint...

The conference venue makes money — but the speakers don’t? By taking an unpaid engagement, the privileged person silences the voices of people I want to hear from the most. If they aren’t, I’ll ask if the venue or organizers are getting paid. If the venue is donating the space — I’ll consider going. But if the venue is getting paid and the speakers aren’t? I give up.

Magic flip chart

Skills we can learn from comedians

The Speaker Point

A fun activity is to look up comedians on Youtube, and watch them perform the same jokes at different venues. Skill 3: Comedians are constantly connecting with the audience Great comedians are constantly engaging the crowd. They engage through stories, questions, or exaggerated body language. By constantly engaging the crowd, you get a feel for where the audience is, and where they are likely to want to go.

When you have to submit slides early.

Ideally I'm at the venue early enough where I can enact a quick switcheroo of my slides before I begin. My slides are fun, image-based and engaging. And as I stated above, get to the venue early enough so that if you have any slide rearranging to do, you can at least do that. But until there is a shift in the mindset of the organizations who engage us, we are stuck with this reality.

Five things speakers can learn from event planners

Speak Schmeak

Make the best use of the venue. Granted, event planners frequently get to choose their own venue, while speakers are mostly expected to go where the client tells us to go. However, once you know the venue, there are still a lot of things to consider, and event planners are masters at making any venue workable. There is one venue at UC Santa Barbara that I've spoken at many times, where I have to walk from one end of campus to the other.

Rate Your Public Speaking Comfort Level

DeFinis Communications

The good news for these speakers is that they already know how to be comfortable in front of one type of audience, so it’s just a matter of learning how to apply their skills to a new venue to be comfortable in every new situation they encounter. They prepare, rehearse, and gain insight from every speaking engagement. When it comes to nervousness in front of a group, I have noticed people generally fall into one of four categories, which I describe as the following four levels.

Unforgiven - Those Who Don't Learn from Suffering (e.g. The Clintons v. Monica Lewinsky who did)

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Through myriad venues she has told us how suffering had changed her. She engages with her diverse audiences as a real human being who has been through the wringer. In Canada, Scotiabank Arena had lots of empty seats. They were vacant because, as Maureen Dowd points out, The Clintons have become irrelevant to Canadians.    In America, in addition to becoming weary of that brainy duo from Yale Law School, we have decided not to forgive them their sins.
