Lessons from a trade show

I just spent the past three days at a specialty foods trade show. My favorite exhibitors by far (even if I didn't love the product), were the ones who had stories to tell and engaged with the attendees. They were passionate about their sauces and candies and it showed in their conversation. I've been attending this show for probably 13 years now, and I know the products and his store almost as well as he does. Download audio here.

While discussing audience engagement strategies the other day, a client suggested that these strategies might not work for her kinds of audiences, especially at scientific conferences, where there are standard protocols. The audience at a scientific conference is going to be very different from the audience at a food trade show. However, you can generally assume that all audiences want to be engaged. In that sense, an engaging opening is what your audience wants.
