They pay attention to visual cues, to the movement of the face, especially the lips, as a person speaks. The idea that visual information affects speech perception is not new and is probably something you’ve noticed. Watching a dubbed film, for example, presents a problem to most viewers at first because they cannot reconcile the sounds they are hearing with the shapes of the mouths speaking the film’s original language. It’s called the McGurk effect.

We speak at conferences where an audience member is torn between three different breakout sessions, and might leave in the middle to catch parts of each.

Finding Feedback

As speakers, finding the right feedback - feedback that doesn't either fill our heads with delusional opinions of our greatness (which seems to be the modus operandi of the American Idol judges this year) or blast our speeches with such ferocity that we run underground wondering if it will ever be safe to speak again - is a tremendous challenge. Finding out whether or not you are delivering for the people you are speaking for is important, of course.
