Speech Coaching

Speaking Of...

Speaking is not presenting. Even if you don't speak for a living there are many who believe that effective speaking is a flashy slide show. When you're more relaxed, speaking comes easier. Most workers need to speak, at one time or another, and speak far more, in more ways, and more often, than top executives. If you speak in live meetings, conference calls, webinars , or are interviewed on radio or TV, you are a speaker.

Avoid Energy Zappers

Humor Power

Before you speak, take a brisk walk, or do some jumping jacks! Warm up before you speak…or you’ll warm up as you begin your speech. A large gap between the first row of audience members and the platform on which you speak is not good. When you speak outdoors, energy is sucked up to the sky. How rhetorical techniques work: an example from last night's Question Time

Max Atkinson

Part of the answer is because their structure provides listeners with implicit instructions that enable them to anticipate exactly when the speaker will finish - so that they can be ready to respond as soon as he/she gets to the end (in much the same way as we're able to know when to respond in a conversation without interrupting or leaving a potentially embarrassing silence before we start to speak).

Max Atkinson's Blog: Steve Jobs shows how to use an object as a visual aid (and how to speak about it)

Max Atkinson

When teaching and writing about the effectiveness of different types of visual aid, one that I always recommend for getting a positive response from audiences is the use of an object or prop to get your point across.
