Commit to Continuous Learning and Up Your Game at Any Age

DeFinis Communications

Recently I attended a Zoom birthday party for the 99-year-old father of a dear friend. Everyone in attendance—three generations of his family members—were in their own homes. Doug and his wife (also in her 90s) were totally unassisted by the younger crowd yet were using Zoom like pros. I learned that they also email and text family and friends regularly, and use all the latest technology. What struck me most while on the call was the ease with which this couple was communicating on Zoom.

Getting Around the Law of Supply & Demand in Freelancing - Don't Sell Your Labor for Peanuts

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Those in the gig economy, including newly displaced journalists, have noticed this: Compensation is down. Frequently dramatically. That's how it is. And it extends across almost all the sectors, be they law or project management.    Content-creation assignments in marketing communications, for instance, which used to pay 10-cents a word now offer 2 to 4 cents a word. And, nowhere in sight are assignments posting 20-cents per word.

Forced to Develop Business in New Ways, Law Firms Give Marketers a Seat at the Table

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

So much of law firm marketing involved pitching in-person. The continuum extended from the long meal in an upscale restaurant to a presentation on a hot topic such as sexual harassment.    Without that personal reach, law firms have to rely more on the skills and creativity of their in-house marketing group. As a result, reports  Intapp,  marketers have gained a place at the table.

Madonna - Symbol of How Not to Age

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

What was entertainer (or, put more accurately former entertainer) Madonna doing on Instagram supporting hydroxchoroquine as COVID-19 treatment?    The answer might be: Trying to force the media spotlight back on herself.    Forbes reports Instagram flagged the video Madonna posted on this essentially as misinformation.    We roll our eyes. Whatever. Clearly Madonna is mutating into a symbol of how not to age.

Broken Supply Chains & Working From Home (WFH)

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

This Working From Home (WFH) has been going on for a while. Since March, for some of us. But, it's not getting easier. At least not when we run out of what we need to get our assignments done. Last week, I needed to print out documents for a client. Yeah, real old-line stuff. Like, who does hard copy. Well, that client does.    The printer wasn't printing.    I figured: Buy a new one. No big deal. But it was going to be a big deal. I went to Best Buy.

Week of July 27th, New York Magazine's Madame Clairevoyant Says Calm Down (learn to be your own psychic)

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

It's what your mother would tell you. Or, if you had become your own psychic you would have figured out for yourself.    This week New York Magazine's Madame Clairevoyant observes that sure, the planets and earth-bound stuff are both high tension. However, the way through it all is to calm down.    So much of what psychics recommend is intuitive common sense. As for my Zodiac sign - Taurus - she cautions about a yearning to just freeze-in-place.

The Science and Art of Bicycling - What Adults Are Learning or Relearning during COVID-19

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

There were those fortunate enough to have bicycles before the supply went poof in metro areas. The rest might still be out of luck. They can't find a bicycle to purchase and to learn from scratch or to relearn the science and art of balancing on two wheels. Bicycle riding, as opposed to public transportation or getting flabby w/o going to the gym, has gone total cool during COVID-19.

After Christmas 2020, Maybe We Won't Be Flipping Through O in Beauty Salons

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

It had been a predictable pleasure. There would be the latest edition of Oprah's magazine O on the tables in the beauty salon. Usually available had been multiple copies since the read was so popular. That could go the way of affordable luxury of sitting down in Starbucks for hours with an exotic coffee bev.    Showbiz411 reports the rumor that the print version of O could cease to exist after December. There could be vestiges of it digitally. Not many details are out there.

There he is again.    Graydon Carter.    He used to be a trend-setter. Had writers, editors, and photographers doing back flips to work for him. And  And knew how to throw a good party. Invitations to his Academy Awards galas were big deals. That was, as much of influence, attached to his title as the head of glossy Vanity Fair. Remember the print era?    Then that title was gone. Currently he puts out Saturday digital newsletter Air Mail.

Yes, Blogging Is Mature Medium - But Still Functions as Marketing Workhorse

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Blogging requires time. Not as easy as dashing off a whatever on a social network like Twitter. Also, blogs are a mature medium. But they still pull in a lot of new business - and motivate former clients to return. As many know, there is a severe shortage of bicycles across the U.S. In a blog post I told my story of how, despite that, I did find a 24-inch woman's bike, along with how I re-learned to balance on two wheels.    Yes, the blog post did help bring in a new account.

Main Street workers who are part of younger generations are also taking on gig assignments in addition to their "anchor job." " The good news on that is that if laid off from the primary job the displaced worker can still collect unemployment - despite working a side hustle.

#Nobody Likes Me - Donald Trump as King Lear

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The meme of William Shakespeare's tragic drama "King Lear" is self pity. Amid the suffering he brought on himself, the king cries out that he is more sinned against than sinning. That gives them the protections and benefits which employees have under federal and state laws.    Uber, along with other businesses whose model depends on gig workers, has invested $110 million to have that law overturned. In November it will appear on the ballot for voters to decide.
