The British import "Upstairs Downstairs" delighted us Americans. But, actually, we had and still have our own versions of the upstairs/downstairs phenomenon. But, as with many aspects of Americana, they are class-neutral. For example, in pre-gentrified Jersey City, New Jersey, a family would pool financial resources and purchase a duplex. The aging mother lived downstairs. The daughter, with her husband and children, lived upstairs.
