Denver Post - Trying to Understand Charles Plunkett

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

So, we struggle today to understand why Plunkett published an editorial in his newspaper - The Denver Post - on April 6th attacking its owner. As at many newspapers, the Denver Post had been going through layoffs. In some journalistic circles - such as the muckraking digital sites - Plunkett might look like a good hire. Many of us in communications started out doing some form of journalism.

Denver Post to Cut 30 in Newsroom

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The powers-that-be at the Denver Post announced that in early April about 30 - 1/3rd the newsroom - will be laid off. But, with public relations becoming increasingly sophisticated, journalists have to figure out how to persuade those hiring that they can keep clients very very happy. Again, those whose identity is "journalist," receive a brutal reminder that the industry is downsizing.

Finding Feedback

Speak and Deliver

Hire a Coach - someone who you respect, who is succeeding on a level beyond your own. I wrote a post in 2009 that covers many points that are important in considering who you hire , including location, experience, and costs. If you'd rather avoid the hassle of finding a coach, just hire me - I still have a spot or two available for one to one coaching, no matter where you live. Finding Forrester is one of my favorite films, despite the fact it isn't necessarily a great movie.

3 Ways I Would Have Helped Michael Bay Prevent Speaking Armageddon

Speak and Deliver

Last night, at a meeting for Ignite Denver, I heard a brief mention of Michael Bay''s Samsung meltdown yesterday at a Samsung unveiling event. Today, World Champion of Public Speaking Lance Miller, who will be here in Denver in a couple weeks for our Leadership Training, sent out an email with a video link, suggesting we ALL need to be ready for ''our big moment'' - how right he is. Or hire a coach.

Hybrids: Package services, giving clients/customers choices

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

In Denver, reports Sarah Perez in Tech Crunch, the retailer is piloting a version through which customers can order groceries online.  Because so much information about legal proceedings is available on the web and hiring a lawyer is expensive, more people are representing themselves (pro se litigation) - or at least trying to. WalMart has turned online grocery delivery into an interesting hybrid.

A Triumphant Return?

Speak and Deliver

Once in Denver, then that afternoon in Colorado Springs. As a result, I think I actually told folks NOT to hire me as a coach, though my intent was to say there were lots of coaches out there, and I''d happily find them one that would match their style and personality, if I could. After coming home from the International Conference in August, I haven''t done much speaking.

Over-50 & Rejected for the Job - 5 Tips to Outsmart Your Own Mind & Those of Employers

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The good news is that there are 5 proven ways we can outsmart our own minds and even those of employers who hire us for full-time, part-time, and contract work.  The introverted laid-off Denver Post journalists are unlikely to land work by positioning and packaging themselves as hard-charging salespeople. And, come on, why should any employer hire someone running low on professional prospects.

Alan Weiss and Patricia Fripp "The Odd Couple" set a date!

Fripp THE Executive Speech Coach

I wrote Alan, regretting that I couldn't attend a seminar he was doing in my hometown of San Francisco because I would be speaking for the Denver NSA chapter that day. As a result of his influence, I now take more vacations, have bought a vacation home, am hired to work with smaller audiences more as a consultant, coach and trainer, and—yes—I'm more profitable. Dates for The Odd Couple Marketing and Strategy seminar are set for June 12-13, 2010.
