This May, at its commencement, Hampshire College featured a staff member as speaker. Roberta Tudryn, the cashier in the college's dining hall, gave a commencement address unlike any I've heard. This speaker knew every graduate--something those marquee commencement speakers can't match--and her genuine emotion and unique perspective come through clearly. At the end of his speech, Mir gets the audience on their feet again - this time for a standing ovation. While clearly the audience appreciates the speech itself, I believe that his opening stretch made it more likely for the audience to stand up at the end.
