I'm going to start this post with the shocking lack of attention I see every day to professional image: clothes that don't fit; an e-mail full of typos; disheveled hair; a website that looks like it was built by a 5-year-old; a voice mail message spoken so fast, I can't understand the phone number; a week or more response time to a phone message. Do your clothes fit properly ? All with a shift in the color and shape of their clothing, makeup and hair.

The trouble is that many trainers seem all too ready to accept and propagate a more rigid doctrine, in which things like folded arms are assigned a single, unambiguous and unvarying meaning in all situations. Nor, on the several occasions when I have asked lecturers or trainers who have presented it unquestioningly as ‘fact’, has any of them ever been able to cite the source, or to provide any further details about the original study.

Like your clothes, they provide context and framing for your message. I keep saying this , but here it is again: clothes are costumes, and costumes are powerful symbols. Whether you’re speaking to six of your colleagues or 600 strangers, your clothes matter. People are looking at you for a while–even if they don’t process your clothes consciously, they’ll do so in the background cycles of their brain.
