Stand or sit, and why does it matter?

When we think of public speaking, the traditional image that comes to mind is a person standing in the front of a room full of people. However, there are a variety of formats for what can be considered public speaking, such as leading a meeting, making a sales call, participating in a panel or round table discussion, or speaking to individuals at a networking event. Are you on a raised stage, or are you at eye level with the audience?
