How to prepare a televised speech, Part (3): clothes, voice, face & furnishings

Max Atkinson

If ever there was a programme that matched up to all three of the objectives enshrined in the Royal Charter of the BBC - 'to inform, educate and entertain' - this was surely it. This video clip completes the series celebrating the 30th anniversary of the BBC's classic sit-com Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister, the first programme of which was broadcast on on 25th February, 1980.

I attended our local French Festival last weekend and, for about a half hour, hubby and I sat in the audience at one of the entertainment stages. The French Festival entertainment features many colorful performers, including a group that reenacts the court of Henri III, Can-Can dancers in traditional costumes, tango and Polynesian dancers, a Femmes Fatales drag show, and numerous chanteurs and chanteuses delivering traditional French songs.

I get very impatient with this whole "comfort issue" with clothing. Yes, you don't feel as comfortable in clothes that fit as you do in your pajamas. I must say, I'm not surprised to hear someone from the fashion industry eschew comfort in clothing. Most of my clothes have a hint of stretch. Steven Tyler’s Rooster Feathers are a High Performance Prop

DeFinis Communications

In entertainment, performance, and even public speaking, props play an important role when creating an image or making a key point. What key item or piece of clothing can become your signature—something that increases your recognition and makes you memorable? Whether your prop is something you hold or something you wear, your audience will connect it to your message, thus making your points more memorable. For example, I know a professional speaker whose signature prop is a hat.

I’ll be looking at how to avoid some of these presentation planning traps in a live webinar with Ellen Finkelstein next week.

That may sound esoteric, but it has a real impact on your success: If all we talk about is what you''re wearing, we''re not hearing you.

Some nuggets of wisdom I enjoyed included his explanation of ''organ rejection'' within an organization, avoiding getting his toes stepped on by not putting them in the way of his team in the first place, and his use of visual reminders (in his case, a piece of clothing with USMC on it) to give him a ''subliminal Attitude Check'' (my words, not his). You’ll entertain your audience a lot more, and your message will be much stickier in your audience’s heads. Like your clothes, they provide context and framing for your message.
