IndieReader, Byline Disappeared, No Response From Founder Amy Edelman

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

IndieReader is the organization, headed by Amy Edelman , which earns its revenue by giving exposure and providing services to self-published authors. I was checking the links on both published content for my byline and for that ghostwritten for clients. I noticed that the IndieReader article no longer had my byline. It could have been in the small print of a contract I might have signed with IndieReader that the byline is disappeared after a certain period of time.

When Facebook Changes Algorithm - Not Every Publisher Perishes

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

But, the near-death experiences of publishers are only part of the story. At Recode , Rani Molla reports that some publishers are actually gaining from what Facebook has been doing with its algorithm during the past year. No question, readers of this blog also want to know what publishers are suffering because of Facebook's decisions. Overall, the digital media publishing niche is a tough place to be. Sure, the territory usually brings a byline.

Get Published in Brandname Media - Here's the Bulletrproof Strategy

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

From the get-go, she admits in her bylined article that she was sitting pretty freshman year in college. You are more likely to be published about this than through an article on presidential debates and fact-checking. Jennifer Billock nailed a nice placement in The Guardian. Her story? She has piled on $200,000 in student loan debt + interest. She is honest, though. She had no student loans and essentially a free ride.

He recently published two articles, which I’ll share with the attendees in my next career workshop: &# How to Break into Freelance Writing: Using Bylines to Build Your Career&# (Saturday, October 9, Philadelphia) . WALL STREET JOURNAL Op-eds: Contrarian Nassir Ghaemi gets published

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

"How can we get our client's opinion-editorial [op-ed] published in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL?"   Thanks to that insight, I penned an op-ed for president Jimmy Lee which had been published in NEWSWEEK.    That's mostly because those whose bylines appear on the op-ed tend to be risk-averse when it comes to discussing positions. They Publish a book.

Vanity Fair - Monica Lewinsky Joins Its Stable of Writers

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

It's the glam opportunity to die for: Being published in Vanity Fair. And, well, Monica Lewinsky essentially did that - die to be able to have her byline in that glossy. Here is her piece. Lewinsky died many times - emotionally, spiritually and in terms of branding. And now there is a payoff. You go, girl.   Branding careers Media

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Self-publishing bylined opinion-editorials and articles on it might hurt not help your branding in your discipline. Often there are serial publishers. LinkedIn is an influential, powerful platform. But not for everything. Daily, I get notices that this member or that member of LinkedIn has put out there a provocative piece on this or that. Every week there's another notice of yet another bit of insight.

Book Authors Now Earn $17,500 Annually (Authors Guild Survey)

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Picking up assignments writing for my own byline for The New York Times or publishing books was fun. We have to transcend the longing for a byline in prominent media in order to make a good living. Being a book author was like being an English college professor. You loved what you did but you didn't expect to make much money. However, you could survive financially if you watched your pennies. That was called "genteel poverty."

Conde Nast - Future In Play

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

And The Dream was to have an article published in one of the Conde Nast titles. The closest I came to being admitted to paradise was having my work published in McCall's, Family Circle, and Pittsburgh Magazine. My crude mantra is:  You pay dearly for having a byline.    For a journalism assignment, that is being granted a byline, content providers might receive one-tenth what I earn as a ghostwriter or marketing communications pro.

Content Marketing - Long Form Dominates

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Those public relations players who publish articles on industry newsletter O'Dwyer PR are engaging in content marketing. But, those doing the publishing invest the resources pitching the idea to the O'Dwyer editorial staff and then creating the material in order to accomplish commercial objectives. So, yes, it's not mistaken to classify much of the outsider-bylined articles and opinion-editorials on O'Dwyer PR as content marketing.

Ghostwriter's Love Affair with Journalism: Schoolgirlish Crush?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The satisfaction of doing a deep dive into a subject, the sources' pleasure at being interviewed and folks contacting you after they see your byline.    Today, the publisher of a regional parents' publication offered me $60 for a 1,000 worder on online education.  For 1,000 worder with a client's byline on, say, an opinion-editorial, I would be paid a buck or two bucks per word.

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

For relative peanuts but for my own byline I researched and wrote articles on stocks for an investment guidance firm. After 140 published articles I figured that was more than enough for my portfolio. There are myriad ways of investing in our careers - and getting screwed. The classic example currently is graduating from law school. The student loan debt can run about $150,000.

"Genius" Re-creates Era When Books Mattered

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Perkins approached publishing as a mission, not a business. Much of publishing, especially self-publishing, is a business. No longer do I advise clients to publish a book as a price of entry.   Because journalism pays so poorly and demands so much, I stopped doing bylined articles last January. Previously I did publish one novel which was #60 on Amazon for a while.

When I was in college at Seton Hill , Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Sister Maurice of the Psychology Department had the majors study me.  It was to measure my creativity. When I was in graduate school at the University of Michigan members of the Psychology Department also studied me.

Herb Schmertz, Dead at 87 - Showed the World Power of Sponsored Content, Then Called "Advertorial"

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

That was through creating op-eds about energy and paying to have them published in The Wall Street Journal.   In those days that publishing tactic was called "advertorial," Today it's known as "sponsored content" or "native advertising." The first homerun for me was getting Gulf's president Jimmy Lee's commentary published in Newsweek. Herb Schmertz became  the  brandname in public affairs.

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Both for clients' bylines and for my own, I provide research, fresh thinking, and content on bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The Tribune-Review published the article. I have become part of the bitcoin loop. That ranges from simplified information about this form of currency (some classify it as a commodity) to marketing communications. That opens the possibility that I might set up my bitcoin wallet and send bitcoin tokens to others.

Book Authors: Mostly Labor of Love or Marketing Tool

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Also, increasingly it's irrelevant whether the books are produced by a publisher such as HarperCollins or a self-publisher like iUniverse.com.  It could be a memoir of growing up rich in Europe and will be self-published.  Along the way, of course, could be invitations for lucrative speaking engagements and one from a standard publishing house to do a book which will earn money.  The other two are self-published.

Ghostwriting in Recovering Economy: Gravitas still dominates, dog fight for media placements

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Executives want their bylined pieces to be published in brandname media.    In that way, we aren't the fall guy or girl when the piece doesn't get published. Ghostwriters are again enjoying having too much to do.    Our natural state is to be complaining about something and it's like the good old days to be grousing about pulling an all-nighter and the client not even noticing that we made that ridiculous deadline.

Language - Year of "Pivot"

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

That's because this week I had two articles published, for my own byline, in third-party media. The term "pivot" will peak. And then another word will replace it. Those still putting out there "pivots" will sound like yesterday.

Two thugs had snuffed out the lives of his wife and two young daughters. Dr. Petit attended the trials of both, with ended in death sentences for both. On November 23rd, Dr. Petit and his wife Christine Paluf welcomed a baby boy.

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

No longer were they contacting us for bylined articles to be published in the business media or for presentations to be delivered at prestigious forums such as the World Economic Forum. When Enron collapsed in 2001, diverse constituencies suffered where it hurts the most - in the pocketbook. After all, we live in the system of (brutal) capitalism. About 5,600 employees lost jobs.

Don't Self Promote: Have the grapevine do that for you

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Can you self promote through publishing articles for your byline and delivering speeches? Contagious.    That's the meme for 2014. Too many are mistaking that for the need to self promote. Forget it.   Self promoters are known as just that: Self promoters.  Instead the way to become contagious is to have others promote you. That's a Machiavellian maneuver we Baby Boomers know well.

They include executive-bylined articles and opinion-editorials published in brandname media, website content, social media such as blog posts and tweets, scripts for podcasts and videos, speeches, and employee communications.  The money in ghostwriting is, no surprise, at the high end.      We aren't going to make the big bucks answering ads placed on Craigslist by micro business folks wanting a book ghostwritten for $2500.

Ghostwriting: Less editorial work, more for marketing communications/sales

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

When I contact public relations agencies about freelance assignments I provide the laundry list of publication credits under clients' bylines.  I have a hunch that getting clients' work published in brandname media such as THE WASHINGTON POST and THE WALL STREET JOURNAL will only get a ghostwriter so far these days.  There is a theory that all messaging is in some way related to selling.

My idea of a good death for myself: Pressing the send button on an opinion-editorial which will be published in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL under the client's byline the next day and then having the big bang. We who stayed riveted to John Branch's THE NEW YORK TIMES article "Snow Fall: Avalanche at Tunnel Creek" know that long form journalism is not dead.    The piece is packaged in its own section in the Sunday edition.

Yes, It's Come to This: Wanting to Quit All Social Media But Can't, Not Professionally, Not Socially

Just last night I was reflecting: Can I relocate to a small U.S. town near Mexico, semi-retire, and finally quit all social media?
