“Single-Task” Your Way to Presentation Success

DeFinis Communications

If eye contact is the chosen skill, you set up the room by putting sticky notes on various chairs around the room or by putting a few stuffed animals in the chairs so you can make eye contact with actual “eyes.” Then give a few lines of your presentation and focus on your eye contact only, making sure to look at one sticky note or animal for a full three-to-five seconds as you speak before moving on the next.

There were the usual offenders: Lines of text in 8-point font, lots of dense graphs, mixed up font styles and sizes, no color scheme to speak of, and no images, photos or video. Analysis of a Speech by Conan O’Brien

Manner of Speaking

At 24 minutes, it is too long to go through it line by line, but I have noted several things that made it excellent. For example, “In fact, just this morning I left Baker Berry with my Tripee Barry to eat a Billy Bob at the Bema when my flitz to Francesca was Blitz-jacked by some D-bag on his FSP.&# (6:00). I’d like to end my address by breaking a taboo and quoting myself from 17 months ago. is a fabulous line.

I also know that I don't feel in the least bit motivated to do a line-by-line analysis of Putin's speech along the lines of the one I did of Obama's back in 2008 ( HERE ). If you've been following the debate about scripted versus unscripted speeches ( HERE ), Putin's victory speech gives us a chance to review two comparable examples.

President Obama’s 2,000 Year Old Speaking Secret

Rhetoric can be seen as someone not being honest by saying what they mean. An example of a tricolon can be Lincoln’s: “Government of the people, by the people, for the people.&#. Near the beginning of Obama’s victory speech, he repast the phrase “it’s the answer”: “ It’s the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen…. “

Are you quoting the King James Bible in your speeches?

The Eloquent Woman

This line-by-line reworking by nearly 50 scholars in the 1600s isn't in everyday, but elegant, phrasings that are loaded with metaphors that still resonate today. There's every chance that, when you give a speech or presentation, you're quoting from a 400-year-old reference book that you probably didn't even pick up or look at. That's how ingrained the language from the King James bible is in English-speaking cultures.

Famous Speech Friday: Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's SB1062 veto

The Eloquent Woman

But it was widely held by civil rights and business leaders to be a broadly written law that would lead to discrimination based on religious beliefs, particularly against LGBT individuals. By the time the bill reached Arizona Governor Jan Brewer for her signature or veto, the debate over the bill had gone national and become increasingly vitriolic. In The New Yorker , Hendrik Hertzberg has a nearly line-by-line analysis of the speech that is an excellent read.

President Obama's victory speech & the return of rhetoric

Max Atkinson

It's four years since I posted 'Rhetoric & imagery in Obama's victory speech' ( HERE ) , based on a line-by-line analysis of a piece that was originally commissioned by the Independent on Sunday. It is still by far the most frequently read post of the 961 that have appeared on this blog since it first started. The Obama campaign found that their key voters were turned off by soaring rhetoric and big plans.

BBC rediscovers the 'Lost Art of Oratory' (again)

Max Atkinson

So a few months ago Alan Yentob, who in his former job at the BBC played a part in taking speeches off the air, suddenly became interested in the subject, probably to justify the expense of sending so many staff to Washington for Obama's inauguration - on which, see ‘The Lost Art of Oratory’ by a BBC executive who helped to lose it in the first place.

Rhetoric & imagery in Obama's victory speech

Max Atkinson

It hasn't been posted on their website, probably because the layout with red circles around lines from the speech linked to the notes caused problems in creating a readable web page. The newspaper’s introduction to the piece is reprinted below, followed by the full text of the speech with my notes in italics between paragraphs (which are slightly fuller than those in the published version). High turnout depicted by images of voters in queues, etc.

Rhetoric and imagery in President Obama’s inauguration speech

Max Atkinson

If the number of hits and emails are anything to go by, my earlier line-by-line analysis of rhetoric and imagery in Barack Obama’s victory speech in Chicago (originally published in the British weekly newspaper, the Independent on Sunday ) attracted a good deal of interest. If you’re not familiar with them what follows might make more sense by looking here before reading on.
