On breaking the rules…

Craig Strachan - Keep Talking!

But then as soon as they hear a good presentation, the speaker seems to breaks all of the rules. However, experienced speakers constantly break the rules, but they do so with intent, and for specific effect. Almost every time I have seen somebody break a rule without knowledge of the rule or without reason, it has backfired and resulted in a poorer presentation. Go ahead and break the rules, but do so with intent! Tags: Communication Speaking breaking rules

Toastmasters Friday: Taking a Break doesn't mean Breaking Up

Speak and Deliver

Yes, I took a break. Thankfully, I have acquired a few clients during the break, which is great, but I haven''t been up and speaking at all. So.with no more excuses, after a two and half month break, I returned to my club last night. While I didn''t want to take a break this time around - it was forced upon me to some degree - I believe it was a good break to take. Taking a break, however, doesn''t mean breaking up. Even though I didn''t want to.

Breaking Comedy’s DNA: Review

Pro Humorist

Anyhoo, the meat of his teachings can be found in his eBook, Breaking Comedy’s DNA. For me, I wanted either additional videos available via links in the Breaking Comedy’s DNA eBook or maybe transcripts of the videos that he already has on his blog. Earlier in the year, when I bought the book, I wrote a bunch of comedy material following along some of the exercises in Breaking Comedy’s DNA.

Breaking Up Via Facebook

The Communication Blog

Is this preferable to breaking up face-to-face? If you do break up, what is the proper etiquette for dealing with your former partner's friends, siblings, or parents? Here's an interesting article on teenagers' romantic breakups and poses some interesting questions. For example, is it o.k. to breakup via a posting on your former-partner's wall? Is it o.k. to breakup by simply changing your status to "single"?

Will Your Q&A Session Make or Break Your Next Presentation?

DeFinis Communications

Most presentations benefit from a question-and-answer session (Q&A). Audience members appreciate this time to get clarification, share comments or ideas, and get deeper information on key concepts. However, because the Q&A feels less formal than the main presentation, many speakers neglect to prepare for this time. In reality, the Q&A requires just as much preparation as any other section of your talk. Following are seven tips for a successful Q&A. Encourage questions.

No Breaking News: It Snows in Winter

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

It's expected that local media might position and package several inches of snow as breaking news. The Daily Mail , which usually has bigger fish to fry, has focused on snow. Actually, the coverage is about two snow storms about to occur in the northeast U.S. However, since the amount of the flakes is about six inches, this shouldn't be a story. After all, it does tend to snow in winter.

Networking: Break into a conversation

Speak Schmeak

Why does it seem rude to break into a conversation at a networking event, when we are clearly all there to meet people? We've all been taught that it's rude to interrupt, and it's a hard rule to break. However, at a networking event, it's perfectly acceptable -- even desirable -- to break into conversation groups. If meeting people is your goal, you're going to have to force yourself to break the "interrupting rule."

"Breaking Bad" - Walt cowers

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

It's Walt's cell phone, which Hank tracks, that proves his undoing.  He meets up with law enforcement in the desert where he went to retrieve his money that's buried in canisters.  Hank arrests him and reads him his rights. Finally, we bear witness to Walt's cowering in the car as a shoot-out takes place in the desert.  His life, full of his deluded rationalizations, flashes before him.

"Breaking Bad" - Hank knows

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The game is over, and Walter doesn't know it.    He made the bad sentimental move of keeping a book of poetry by Walt Whitman which Gale gave him.    In it Gale made the warm gesture of inscribing it to Walt who later helped murder him.    Hank finds the book in Walt's bathroom.    He connects the dots.    Walt is a key player in the old meth factory.

Vicki Archer - Like So Many of Us, She Felt She "Needed a Break"

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

She announced that she "needed a break." Suppose Archer took that break, instead of offing herself? According to MacConaill's widow, he needed a break but didn't allow himself to take it.   This morning, after a professional disappointment earlier this week, I decided that I needed a break. How I take breaks is through intense blogging and finding a stretch of land the dog can run on without a leash.

"Breaking Bad" - Starting over

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Sure the meth factory was about power and control.      But all that was secondary (despite how much Walter was preoccupied with such intangibles) to the money.    Now that the feds have frozen the account Gus set up in the Cayman Islands no one is getting any money. Mike, who we find out used to be a police officer, has lost $2 million.    He has no choice but to have to start over again with, of all people, Walter.

"Breaking Bad" - The Horror

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

"  We who have become so involved with the characters on "Breaking Bad" feel the same sentiment tonight.  Somehow, those who put together "Breaking Bad" have created the fright and shock value of a Stephen King novel.  In Joseph Conrad's "The Heart of Darkness," Mr. Kurtz cries out "The horror."

"Breaking Bad" - Theme of poison

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

In last night's episode of "Breaking Bad," what's obvious is that poison has entered all systems.   Hank is neutralized because he realizes his status as lawman has been poisoned by the money from the meth operation. Skyler and Walt inform him they had paid his medical bills with it.    Jesse gets it that Walt was likely the one who poisoned the little boy Brock.  He sets off and pours gasoline all over Walt's house.

New York time) evening news with the phrase "breaking news." This evening, David Muir opened the ABC 6:30 P.M. " He did not use the term he had used last week several times. That was "bombshell." "Breaking Bad" - Gus Knows

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

"Breaking Bad" is one of the bleakest dramas on AMC.  Delusional about how the work operates and a hot head, Walter White has doomed himself.    He can't get out and buy the car wash he wants because he stuck it to the owner.    He will likely be murdered by Gus or one of Gus's trusted subordinates.    He had been trailed by Mike when he paid big money to buy a gun with the serial number removed.

Speechwriting: How to break in

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

So, how do you break into this niche? The sweet spot in writing has always been speechwriting.  That's because we in the craft can charge premium fees since what we put together must fit the speaker perfectly.  After a recesssion in our industry, demand is back and growing.  There is no one fee schedule.  But for a client in a large organization, the billing is about $100 a minute for delivered text.

"Breaking Bad" - Everything Changes

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The tension was unbearable.    Hank has connected the dots.    He not only is convinced that Gus is heading a meth operation.    He has located the meth farm.    All he needs is a ride there to "take a look around."  "  Walter stalls him to wait until he can drive him there.    What Walter is doing is buying time about how to handle Hank.

Where in the World is Akio Toyoda?

One headline that a company in crisis could certainly live without is “ Inside Toyota, Executives Trade Blame Over Debacle “ — this morning’s headline in the Wall Street Journal. This comes on the heels of a controversy surrounding the Lexus GX460 — suspension of the sale of the vehicle following Consumer Reports issuing a rare “Do Not Buy&# warning. While the news doesn’t get better for Toyota, their handling of the Lexus crisis did.
