Conference attendees will choose which breakout sessions to attend based on the description of your workshop and their needs and goals. Sometimes you know in advance how many people will attend your session, because pre-registration is required. And sometimes, attendees make up their minds at the last minute, because they don't have to pre-register, meaning that you have no idea who will attend your session. But here's the thing: I didn't go to another session.

What's the point of speech contests?

Most of us have jobs speaking in rooms where the boss has mandated our audience to attend, or we are tasked with delivering bad financial news, or we are speaking about a topic that the audience has no interest in, like OSHA compliance or sexual harassment. We speak at conferences where an audience member is torn between three different breakout sessions, and might leave in the middle to catch parts of each.

London workshop: Creating a TED-quality talk, April 3

You'll learn how and why TED presentations engage, inspire, intrigue, surprise, and put forward "ideas worth sharing." Speechwriters: Don't be confused I'm also leading a breakout group on "How to prepare your speaker for a TED talk" at the Oxford Speechwriters' and Business Communicators' Conference 2017 the previous week to this workshop, on 30 March. That's a much shorter, more focused session, and will not replicate the contents of the 3 April workshop in London.

If they don't ask, but give you the engagement, send 'em a contract with your fee. What topics do they need? I Spoke to ABC Company About This Topic, Which Resulted In XYZ. You'll have to gauge their hatred for the competition, perhaps offer it as 'they have something you don't' - depends on the topic. This lets them know you're willing to give them a customized session, and that you are more interested in what they need to hear than what you want to say. -

Hash tags on each session as well as the event might help. But I think more of the business networking happens during the event, in between the sessions, than at dinners and tweetups. a few years ago, there were plenty of sessions and a nice trade show floor but most of the activity that I found interesting and valuable took place in the blogger's lounge. But it's a thought-provoking topic Chris.
