Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur: How to publish a book, by Guy Kawasaki and Shawn Welch. Although I would like to publish an ebook at some stage, it is not something that I am looking at doing right now, so the review copy on my Kindle sat there for quote a while before I got to browsing through it. When I eventually got to it, I read the entire book cover to cover in a single day. Books Writing book review

Marketing in Era of Amazon - Publishing a Book = Risky Business

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Before Amazon, publishing a book had been an effective marketing tool. Currently, book publishing entails considerable reputational risk. Minute by minute, Amazon updates both the book sales, via rankings, and reviews.   That risk factor has to be factored into the decision of whether to invest resources in publishing a book (including the ghostwriting and promotion fees) or go with other tactics.

The Business of Book Publishing - Bob Dilenschneider's "Decisions"

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

A sign network television is a medium in decline: There still are commercials hawking publishing a book as fulfillment of a dream. Just call the number on the screen and that company will do all the heavy lifting to get your book in print.   The reality is that publishing a book has become a business. Anything less strategic will doom the book to the Amazon hell of bottom-barrel rankings and no customer reviews.

One Writer’s Tale of Self-Publishing

Six-Figure Freelancer Blog

In 2009, 76% of all books released were self-published, according to Publishers Weekly. The number of self-published print and e-books continue to grow exponentially while the number of books issued by traditional publishers declines. This trend is being fostered by both independent authors and the new wave of print on demand (POD) publishers who publish books for would-be authors lacking the technical skills to otherwise self-publish.

Publishing Book As Content Marketing - The Amazon Effect

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Amazon, which posts sales figures even pre-publication, has changed this game: publishing a book as content marketing. Lousy sales figures position and package not only your book but your professional branding as alleged failure. Takeaway: Unless you can afford to hire a top publicist to get your book into the hands of the right media players, stay out of that game. It used to be assumed that a book was the price of entry. Another factor is self-publishing.

When ViacomCBS announced that it was putting Simon & Schuster up for sale, a chill went through the publishing industry - or should have.    In a polished public statement, ViacomCBS explained that the classic in the book business wasn't a fit with its core portfolio of products. Is that code for the reality that book publishing isn't a growth business? That's why two recent events in the publishing world are important to analyze.

Is self-publishing worth it?

Six-Figure Freelancer Blog

I earn about $10,000 a year from my non-fiction books. For some writers using traditional publishers, that would not be nearly enough. All I know is I earn on 200 books what a traditional publisher would have paid me if they had sold 1,000 books. I’ve sold 10,000 books. If a traditional publisher made me an offer that made sense, I’d think about it. It takes work to make money self-publishing books, but it can be done.
