BBC plug-a-book show slot for aging new left author

Readers of my previous comments on BBC plug-a-book show s won’t be surprised to hear that I didn’t last longer than about three minutes before turning one off last night. Needless to say, Mr Ali, like so many social theorists then and now, has never let facts stand in the way of whatever theory he happened to be espousing on any particular day (or in any particular book). As for how he came to get one of these prime plug-a-book slots, it’s anyone’s guess.

There are quite a number of plug-a-book shows on BBC Radio 4 (e.g. which is, I suppose, what you’d expect from the country's leading talk radio channel. Several times a week, a few lucky authors are invited by the likes of Andrew Marr, Libby Purves and Laurie Taylor to spend ten minutes saying whatever they like about their latest book. Start the Week, Midweek, Thinking Allowed, etc.),

Yesterday, Iain Dale posted a plug for a new book about handling media interviews and included the following observation (by Dale) about Gordon Brown (or 'Boredom Frown', as my granddaughters prefer to call him): “Gordon Brown has catchphrases he uses over and over again.
