Speaking as Artists

Speak and Deliver

Photographers, Artists, Musicians, Writers, Actors and Speakers are all storytellers. Just like all of them, our work is subject to individual interpretation - yet we'd be hard-pressed to ever put 'Speakers' in the same category as any of the aforementioned artists or their peers. Annie Leibovitz and the others are storytellers and artists of the highest order. Still - we are artists. Be an Artist. Speakers Speakers Responsibility Leibovitz Storytelling Artist

Ah! Sometimes the Inner Performance Artist Longs to Break Out

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

In the stressful profession of practicing law, emotions can quickly rise to the surface. If the lawyer can't keep them from breaking free, strange behavior can occur. The question here is: Did it?

What can a speaker learn from a tattoo artist?

Speak Schmeak

Tattoo artists must be some of the most confident professionals out there, along with firefighters and astronauts. Here are a few lessons a speaker can learn from a tattoo artist. A tattoo artist must. merge the client's wishes with what the artist knows will actually be a good tattoo When I got my second tattoo, I brought a tiny Celtic border design that I had put together from a couple of online sources. The tattoo artist looked at it and said, "It's too small."

Harvey Weinstein - Artistic Genius Will Not Exempt Him from Justice

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

To us artistic genius was sacred. We were the pre-tech gen. For that we gave F. Scott Fitzgerald a free pass for being a drunk and Andy Warhol for being manipulative.    But our values aren't carrying over into the 21st century. Now, it is reported but not confirmed, film genius Harvey Weinstein may report tomorrow to the New York State Supreme Court. There, notes Yahoo, he "is expected to surrender to the New York City police on charges of sexual misconduct."

"Diane Arbus" by Arthur Lubow - Beware Ambitious Artistic Types

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Under the guise of bohemian little lost girl, Diane Arbus was a ambitious artist. That's when I got it: Beware ambitious artistic types. To dig deep into what made people tick, she would even set up situations which revealed what she needed to know. An instance of that was the hate party she hosted for supposed friend Pati Hill. All that comes tumbling out of Arthur Lubow's biography "Diane Arbus: Portrait of a Photographer."

Famous Speech Friday: Patti Smith on the artist's journey

The Eloquent Woman

Just such a speech came fully formed in an answer from Patti Smith, a singer, songwriter, poet and visual artist, who is sometimes called the "punk poet laureate." Near the end of the podcast, you can hear this questioner and the response that, to my ear, is a great small speech about the artist's journey. As an artist and art educator I’ve used Just Kids in my classroom to basically talk about an artist's journey and discovering your path.

Family Feud: Mary Max, Widow of Gonzo Artist Peter Max, Commits Suicide

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Wealth has many owners - or so they think. Through his gonzo art, Peter Max created that wealth. Cereal companies, the NFL, and museums purchased those pop culture pieces. As he drifted into dementia, his family has fought over possession of the art. In the middle was his wife Mary Max.    He is 81. Was that family feud what triggered Mary to take her own life? Suicide remains an enigma.

“What do you do?” How to answer this question like an artist

More than PowerPoint...

What do you do? For years, I’ve read articles that tell me to never ask people what they do as an icebreaker. And yet, people I don’t know keep asking me what I do. How about you? Do people ask you what you do a lot? I suspect that no matter how many articles pile up on this topic — people won’t change. They’ll keep at it. They’ll keep asking what I do. That’s cool. But a few years ago, I decided to change my answer.

"Renoir" - The artist as an old and young man

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The film "Renoir" shows how art happens - and how artists make the shift from being simple craftspeople.    That's one way to be an artist.   Before navigating to becoming an artist he selflessly returns to the battle field.  This film about the artist as old and young man also chronicles the universal conflict between father and son.

Matthew Muller - Artists Will Always Have New Material for Depicting Tragedy

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

From ancient Greek times to the present, artists have struggled to sort out why human beings put tragedy in play. They seem to have it all. Then their actions bring it all down. For some reason, those tragic figures dominate the legal profession. Recently, at Abovethelaw , lawyer-journalist Kathryn Rubino featured some of the worst-behaving lawyers. The latest among the worst-behaving lawyers is Harvard Law School graduate and former California immigration lawyer Matthew Muller.

Manhattan - No Land for Old Artists

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The City is no land for old artists. In her recent autobiography  Annie Leibovitz   mentions in passing artists who left the city.    Fame, even in minor doses, can eat the talent of the artist.  The issue isn't: Will Manhattan Last.    The issue, at least for us members of what economic development expert Richard Florida calls "The Creative Class," is: When should we leave.

"J.D. Salinger: The Escape Artist" By Thomas Beller - Intrusive Presence Of Biographer

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

"J.D. Salinger: The Escape Artist" by Tulane University professor Thomas Beller was published in June 2014. It didn't take it long to sink  to 3,995,168 ranking on Amazon.   The reason is not that the subject matter is over-exposed, e.g. the Weinstein documentary on that catch-me-if-you-can supposed recluse. Actually, Salinger's genius could have been his ability to put together and sustain that elusive persona.

"The Artist" - Pride overcome by a dog and a dame

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

"The Artist" resonates in these turbulent times.  Like   Like so many of us Silent Film Star George hits the skids when the technology changes and he can't change.    He refuses to talk.    His pride stands in the way.    Not a terribly original plot but it works wonderfully because of most of the film is done in black and white and without sound.    Also the acting is outstanding.

Great Recession Made Us Different Kinds of Artists

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

That made her a different kind of artist, the one we know who took the memorable photos of individuals and families whose faced were etched in financial angst.  " Some of my artist colleagues and I experienced similar shifts in what we saw and what we intended to do about that in our work.  When the recovery picks up some steam I don't anticipate that too many of us changed artists will high-tail it back to our former themes.

"I Got A Name: The Jim Croce Story" - Baby Boomer's artist struggle with traditional Italian family

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Reviewers of Jim Croce's music frequently commented that his art clearly showed his pain.    The ordeals he sang about, they speculated, he had experienced directly.    And Baby Boomers from ethnic families will recognize that much of that suffering had been rooted in Croce's father's inability to accept that his son wasn't going to take the road more traveled.

Long story short, internet wireless providers such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon will be able to track our web/app behavior, then sell that data to third parties.  Team up with a good graphic artist to display content with infographics and you are good to go. Books , not just one book, remain the price of entry for many professional services firms, including solos. Prospects want more of a feel for what you can do for them than your in-person pitch, website and what's in your media center. A fast, affordable but effective way to achieve that is to home-produce an ebook.  You can do that in about 20 hours.
