Video Applications - Goucher Disrupts

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Instead of spending months being coached for the SAT, applicants to Goucher can plan and create a video. An applicant who has mastery in that medium has demonstrated he or she has the ability to succeed not only in academics but in earning a living.  Let's follow how members of the Class of 2015 who submitted video applications are faring. My hunch is that they will get more out of the college experience than traditional applicants.

Employers 1, Aging Job Applicants 0

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

It decided that the Age Discrimination Employment Act was restricted to employees, not job applicants. Closely watched has been "Dale Kleber v. CareFusion." " Here is a copy of the amended complaint filed in federal court in Illinois. At issue were both age and a cap on experience. The latter, of course, could be interpreted as a tactic to restrict aging professionals from applying for the job.

Your College Application Essay - The 4 Musts

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Admissions committees frequently take the essay part of your college application packet seriously. That's because it provides them insight into who you are a person, what unique value you can add to the mix of students, and if you will eventually enhance the brand of that educational institution. In addition, they are aware of how they are perceived in terms of preparation for a career. Consequently, you should indicate that you have a realistic understanding of that pragmatic issue.

Hubstaff Application for Content Creator/Editor Requires Date of Birth

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

After you go through the first few steps, you finally get to the formal application. Even if I were a Millennial, I wouldn't have continued filling out the application. Puzzling. Hubstaff posts its help wanted for a full-time Content-Creator/Editor on the reputable ProBlogger site. Here is that ad. On it, you are required to provide your date of birth. I am not a Millennial. So I not only halted.

Webselenese Help-Wanted on ProBlogger Doesn't Warn Application Requires Unpaid Work

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

To apply, the applicant has to fill out that business' customized form. There is no warning in the text of the help-wanted on ProBlogger or in the beginning of the application that unpaid work will be required.    By the time the applicant arrives at the box with the unpaid assignment, he or she has already keyed in a variety of information.   Already, of course, the applicant has invested time (and hope) filling out the application.

On Google Doc Assignment Application Form, LeadsPanda Asks My Date of Birth - So Disappointing

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Yes, organizations posting help-wanted ads can request the applicants' date of birth.    What is illegal is to use it against the applicants in the hiring process. But, like, who's to know how the powers that be are factoring in that fact about the applicants? That ad provides a link to a Google Doc form applicants are to click on and fill out. It's legal.

Lifehack, et al. - Read through Application Before Applying

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

That's to read through the entire help-wanted and/or formal application before starting to compose a cover letter or fill in the application. Some of those posting help-wanted, such as Lifehack , have you fill in a lot of detailed information on an application form. The burden, though, is on you to scroll through the stated requirements or the formal application BEFORE you begin your response. There is something those searching for work better get down cold.

UpWork Joins Apple, IBM, et al. in ditching College Degree Requirement in Job Applications

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Like Apple, IBM, and other major corporations, it has eliminated the requirement on applications for jobs inside the company for a college degree. UpWork, the global platform bringing together those needing something done and the gig experts who can do it, has made a telling move. Here it tells its own story in Fortune. One reason why it has adopted this policy is that setting up that kind of gate locks out much of the world's talent.

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The findings of several recent research studies scream one thing: Workers in America are finished at 40, reports MarketWatch. Of course, there are exceptions to that. One had been mega celebrities such as Tom Brady, number 12 in the Patriots. When he is a free agent he will have his choice of plum opportunities. Another group who seem insulated from the brunt of age bias are brandname lawyers. They range from David Boies to Alan Dershowitz.

The game has shifted from the battle between old and new media to which has the best-configured "i" application.  The 'i" applications - their quality and cost - could be the acid test for which media survive and thrive and which go the way of those 1990s boom business publications such as RED HERRING.   Ham-handed approaches to that could end that media property or even pull down the whole parent company.

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

But, another reason I am not applying is that the application requires a one-way video interview.
