3 techniques to copy formatting in PowerPoint

PowerPoint Tips

The good news is that PowerPoint has several techniques to copy formatting and animation. This is actually 2 techniques but I’m putting them together because they’re similar. Again, I’m combining 2 techniques because they are similar–and both very useful. You can use a similar technique to change a shape without losing the formatting. You can also copy animation easily since PowerPoint 2010.

Review: PowerPoint 2010 Bible

PowerPoint Tips

I received a free copy of PowerPoint 2010 Bible by Faithe Wempen. PowerPoint 2010 Bible is indeed very complete. Here’s the slide I created using this technique. It’s published by Wiley and is almost 800 pages. You think that’s a lot? I write the AutoCAD & AutoCAD LT Bible , and it’s almost 1300 pages! The point is, Wiley’s Bible series is meant to be very complete and the books are long.

Fear of Public Speaking, Pt. II – Breathing Techniques

Matt Eventoff

Today will focus 0n a few of my favorite breathing techniques to use prior to presenting or giving a speech: 1. It is a yogic breathing technique I first learned from struggling through Vinyasa yoga classes with Nicole , and now practice for 5-10 minutes every day. Alternate Nostril Breathing Technique (my favorite) – All you need for this is your thumb, your pinkie finger, and your nose (sounds like the start of a bad joke!). In Pt.

Tuesday, June 22, 2010 Get them Standing: Commencement Speeches 2010 As I looked through this years commencement speeches, I came across this delightful opener. June 25, 2010 5:56 PM Sarah Gershman said. Had he merely asked the audience to stretch without joining in, the technique would have bombed. Hamid Mir addresses the graduates of the Kennedy School at Harvard and begins by asking everyone to get up and stretch.

Presentation Tip: Actively Listen to Your Audience

Professionally Speaking...

Try these techniques to show your audience you really do care about and value their thoughts: as audience members make comments or ask questions, don't finish their sentences -- be respectful and wait until the person has finished before you respond. 4 ways to move people from attention to engagement

Speaking about Presenting

Many of the “attention-grabbing” techniques are not particularly appropriate for everyday business presentations. Engage people by using “fascinations”, a copywriting technique. You can use the same technique to compel your audience to listen. For a great summary of these techniques see Garr Reynold’s post: Start your Presentation with PUNCH. In my last post, I argued that you already have attention at the start of your presentation.

Today, 19 November 2010, marks the 147th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address in 1863. Triples are a powerful public speaking technique that can power to your words and make them memorable. In one of the first posts on this blog , I compared Lincoln’s two-minute address with the two-hour oration by Edward Everett on the same occasion.

Public Speaking Lessons from the Old Spice Guy

Manner of Speaking

As I watched them, it occurred to me that the Old Spice Guy uses many of the same techniques that good public speakers use to convey their messages. It’s Friday as I write this post, so time for something on the lighter side. Those of you who live outside North America (as I now do) might not be familiar with Old Spice men’s care products , but when I was growing up in Canada, I used to love the smell of my Dad’s Old Spice aftershave.

PowerPoint Tip: Use these two techniques to get the exact shape you want in a diagram

Dave Paradi's PowerPoint Blog

In this article I want to share two techniques that can be helpful in creating the exact shape you want for an illustration. PowerPoint has a wealth of drawing tools that allow presenters to create a vast array of diagrams to illustrate their points. It is clear from the questions I get in workshops that many presenters are under the mistaken impression that you need to use fancy graphics software or illustration package to draw diagrams. Not at all.

How Not to Stumble from Mumbles

DeFinis Communications

I’ve learned that you can’t cure a mumbler with just one technique or skill. Because mumbling is connected to many other behaviors, if you identify the less obvious you can often find the techniques that will lead to coherent speaking. I once knew a man who had such a serious problem with mumbling that everyone called him ‘Mumbles.’ He spoke in his own private language, sounding as if his mouth was filled with a mixture of peanut butter, guacamole, and oatmeal.

Are you ready for the third era in presenting?

Speaking about Presenting

Each sentence is carefully crafted and the speech taps into a vast repertoire of rhetorical techniques. Gary Vaynerchuck spoke for 10 minutes in front of an audience of 1,000s at SXSW 2010 and then opened up his keynote presentation to questions. There have been three distinct eras of public speaking and presenting. They are all still present today, but at different levels of maturity.

“The Adversary”: A powerful presentation technique

The Presenter's Blog

We have only to listen to talk-radio shock-jocks or watch partisan news networks in order to see the technique in action as one group, frequently a minority, is pilloried in order to boost ratings amongst the network’s core demographic. Such realities might make us justifiably queasy with so tabloid a technique. As with so many techniques of public speaking, subtlety always trumps hyperbole. “In every classic story, the hero fights the villain.”.

How to handle a heckler

Speaking about Presenting

You may think that this technique looks transparent, but the heckler will most likely be totally oblivious – they will simply feel “you’ve listened to me”. Most hecklers are made, not born. If people don’t feel listened to they will turn into hecklers. So the critical step to avoid making hecklers out of people in your audience is to listen. At the Presentation Camp in LA last year I facilitated a session on handling a heckler.

Get your audience’s attention by adding anticipation

PowerPoint Tips

This delivery technique requires you to ungroup the graph and animate its pieces to appear as you explain. In PowerPoint 2007 and 2010, you can’t actually ungroup a chart, so you need to use a workaround. A presentation that communicates well uses a slide to help the audience understand and remember your point. If you use the Tell ‘n’ Show SM Method , you can do this easily.
