I just spent the past three days at a specialty foods trade show. They were passionate about their sauces and candies and it showed in their conversation. A note: At these trade shows, I attend as a representative of the company my husband works for and walk the floor like any other buyer, bringing back materials and suggestions to him about which booths he should visit. We were speaking specifically about opening a presentation with something other than the obligatory five minutes of thank yous and credentials, instead using perhaps a question or a story to kick things off. The audience at a scientific conference is going to be very different from the audience at a food trade show.
