2009 in Public Relations

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The year 2009 was a crossroads one for public relations.    Expect more brutal outings as client grouse that the PR folks can't get them publicity because they don't know digital.   Publish opinion-editorials in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, NEW YORK Magazine, and Politico.com when you do not and will not hire unpaid help.

Saving AMA HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC RELATIONS

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

" What I learned could well rescue AMA HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC RELATIONS.   Published on February 17, 2010 by the American Management Association by Bob Dilenschneider, head of  The Dilenschneider Group , it's not doing as well as those in the loop anticipated. So, how can the AMA HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC RELATIONS be turned around?  In all promotions, add the subtitle: BE YOUR VERY OWN PUBLIC RELATIONS WIZARD.

D2 Hawking AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS at Javits Center

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

As this PDF   informs, D2 has been hawking the book AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS at the Javits Center.    "D2" is the moniker derived by me from the public relations agency Dilenschneider Group's association with D1, that is client Lou Dobbs.    They will be initially issued on August 15th by the publisher - American Management Association.  Nice way to go into the weekend.

Public Relations: The Fifteen Most Common Publicity Mistakes

Fripp THE Executive Speech Coach

The Fifteen Most Common Publicity Mistakes Businesses Make By Patricia Fripp's PR agent Pam Lontos.  As a business owner, you probably know that publicity is important to your success. But many businesses (and maybe you’re one of them) make crucial mistakes in their publicity campaigns. If you want to make the most of every publicity opportunity that comes your way, consider the following mistakes that businesses commonly make in their publicity campaigns: 1. Thinking

AMA HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC RELATIONS: Like careers, books have comebacks too

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

On Amazon.com, the AMA HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC RELATIONS by Robert L.   It was published around February 17, 2010.    Then I found out through Amazon.com the book was not to be published until mid February 2010.      On this blog I signaled the powers-that-be, ranging from Dilenschneider to publisher American Management Association, that the perspective and content had to be brought up to date.

2010: What no longer sells books

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The glut of product caused by self-publishing and desperation.  All these are significant factors depressing the book industry in 2010.    Maria Bartiromo, whose big name is confirmed in NEW YORK Magazine, wrote the Preface for Bob Dilenschneider's AMA HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC RELATIONS.     There is not enough of devoted reading public to keep a book alive on its own merits.   The Great Recession.

Publishing a Tell-All: Risky Business

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

In this era when gossip is a major industry, publishing a tell-all would seem a sure money-maker.    That's about as low as it has been since it was published.    And that could be because Spitzer is poised for a strong comeback, with support from deep-pocketed power brokers such as public relations leader Howard Rubenstein.    Not so.    That's because the world has become too volatile.

"They" are still betting the ranch on publishing a book

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Believe me, that requires lots more than publishing a book. At the end of the 1980s, a public relations leader Bob Dilenschneider published the breakthrough POWER AND INFLUENCE.    In the past five years, Dilenschneider has published a number of books.  Knock out a 150-page book that will be self-published and pay the extra fee to iuniverse.com or Outskirts Press to not only have it distributed digitally but also stocked in bookstores.

2010 - Writers's New Year's Resolutions

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

If hope could pack a voodoo wallop, 2010 will turn out to be a very good year.    For example, public relations agencies might finally be needing hands-on help with social media.    * Publish more books, for our own bylines.    The rule of thumb seems to be: For every book we publish there are about 4 false starts on our hard drive.  A prosperous 2010 to all writers.

Readers, give your input: should I give up my day job?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

That could be in the cards - my tarot card reader tells me - if Bob Dilenschneider's book AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS continues selling.     AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS was published by the American Management Association on February 17, 2010.    From I what I know of the publishing industry, some report of sales and royalties should be available by now.  Not that I really have a day job.

From the 600,000s to the 20,000 Amazon ranking: The book that made it back & did it ever

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The powers-that-be behind Bob Dilenschneider's AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS obviously learned plenty from experience.    When that guide to communications fundamentals as they are being configured by digital technology was published by the American Management Association it quickly sunk to the 600,000s on Amazon.com.    That was in late February 2010.  Lewis was an old soul.

What Happened?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS, by Bob Dilenscheider is at number 673,447 on Amazon.com.    In 1991, his breakthrough book POWER AND INFLUENCE was a best-seller in public relations, quoted verbatim for years.    In 1998, his DARTNELL'S PUBLIC RELATIONS HANDBOOK was a standard reference tool.    I assumed - no, never assume - the publication would be that summer.

Shared Royalties as payment: Pre-digital dreamer

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

To bring in any royalties it has to be published by a big brandname like Sarah Palin or really dish the dirt like THE POLITICIAN.    It will probably not even pay off the advance the publisher [who are running the book business with a 20th-century model] or the self-publishing costs with a service like iUniverse.com.   This month I will find out from The Dilenschneider Group what royalties came in from AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS

The Future is eBooks: Now we have the numbers to give clients

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

On Mediabistro.com, Jason Boog reports that in 2009 the sale of eBooks was up 176.6% [Source: Association of American Publishers.]  These statistics will make it a whole lot easier convincing our public relations clients to knock out those ebooks as advocacy, branding, and sales tools.   Yeah, for every four ebooks, I publish one print one.

That is, of course, that public relations is strong, with a 22% gain in market share.    In the disaster categories are TV, down 19%, teaching, down 13%, and magazine publishing, advertising and graphic design, down 9%. How to transition to doing more work in public relations, no matter what your current area or areas of expertise?  The Jobs Report done by Mediabistro confirms  what most of us know.

Cautionary Tale for Writers

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

So, to ensure that I would be paid on a timely basis for my assistance with preparing the AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS, I put the matter of the collection of the royalty payments in the hands of Adams, Stevens & Bradley, Ltd. The book AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS, by Bob Dilenschneider who heads The Dilenschneider Group, was published February 17, 2010

Progress: I feel like Kalinda on "The Good Wife"

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Sleuthing unfolded this information:  The information about royalties from the book I assisted Bob Dilenschneider with - AMA HANDBOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS - is solely in his hands.    Lately, AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS is selling briskly, even hitting the 20,000s category on Amazon.com over the weekend.  Onward to August 15, 2010. Street vs. elite might be making some progress.

Suicide by Book

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

More often than not it masks itself as a noble intention, such as publishing a book.  Take Cathie Black's BASIC BLACK, which is still selling relatively well after a long time out there.    That's better than the Amazon ranking of the book THE 10 LAWS OF ENDURING SUCCESS which Maria Bartiromo published much more recently.    That book, published around March, is JOURNAL OF THE PLAGUE YEAR.

Book Sales Uneven

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

So, it's no surprise that Bob Dilenschneider's book AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS has been having relatively brisk sales on Barnes and Noble.    In fact, AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS is no longer even listed on Amazon.com.    The publisher - the American Management Association - will issue the report on the sales and royalties mid-August and then in February.

Book Sales - Rules of Success Keep Mutating

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Things don't look so hot this morning for AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS.     Meanwhile Maria Bartiromo, who wrote the "Preface" for the AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS, has her own book out there.    Incidentally, my own recently published book OVER-50: HOW WE KEEP WORKING got its biggest sales bounce when a speech I derived from it was published in VITAL SPEECHES OF THE DAY.

No sweet spot on Barnes and Noble either

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

That's what I warn prospects who have their heart and hopes set on publishing a traditional print book through a traditional print publishing house.    Given this declining market for books, it's no surprise that a solid book like Bob Dilenschneider's AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS hasn't found a sweet spot on Barnes and Noble.    On Amazon.com, AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS ranks at 703,776.

Shorting Non-Bestsellers - How to pump stock of your book

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

In addition, self-publishing opened the gates to anyone who had a thousand bucks and the assumption that there was a story to tell.    For example, Bob Dilenschneider's solid book on public relations strategies and tactics AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS  didn't make it, on launch, into the magic Amazon.com top 1000.    So, present yourself as doing a public service.  It's a glut market for books.

So, its Archbishop Timothy Dolan should have had access to the best public relations help.  But, it appears that Dolan went out there to take on THE NEW YORK TIMES without quality public relations counsel - or the lousy kind.  On October 15, THE NEW YORK TIMES had published positive reviews of an art exhibit by ACT UP that has a poster of the late Cardinal O'Connor next to a condom.  New York is the media capital of the world.

Le Book: Over?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Bob Dilenschneider's guide on the convergence of digital and traditional communications - AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS - is at 530,160. [Disclosure:   Then why are too many still hell-bent on having a book published?  "A book is the price of entry." Writing Our Way Out of the Writers's Glut to The There

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The old-media placement guy in a public relations agency was there and now isn't.    I had published my tale of looking for a job, any kind of job, at the age of 58 Download Geezerguts.  It's overdue: Our recognition that writing is no longer a day job, or even a freelance one.    The market for paid work is shrinking at the same time the glut of us keeps piling up, particularly in metro areas.    There's more.

Aging in America: Beats what youth faces

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

A few years ago I even published a manifesto declaring that I was determined to navigate those challenges Download Geezerguts.    As public relations consultant David Michie observes in BUDDHISM FOR BUSY PEOPLE, the more detached we are, the more the universe tends to smile on us with professional goodies.  "  After he achieved a mindset of nonattachment about becoming a published author, his work found a publisher.

Lou Dobbs: Power of Cult

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Dobbs is being represented by public relations super pro Bob Dilenschneider.    Another bun Dilenschneider has in the oven is a book to be published by the American Management Association [AMA] next month.  That ultimate marketing homerun: Creating and maintaining a cult brand.    Right now AT&T has it with "Sorry, Billy, I'm not missing 'Happy Pony.'"

Rainmaking: Are you selling into 20th-century communications markets?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

A now-classic example are the once-successful scribes who dutifully attend and even speak at those professional trade meetings for speechwriters, publish in old-line speechwriter newsletters, and seek out assignments in speechwriting.    That usually means a return to doing everything in both marketing communications and public relations doing more of what's working.
