Where in the World is Akio Toyoda?

Matt Eventoff

Toyota took action, suspending the sale of the vehicle, offering Lexus loaners to concerned owners , and addressing the issue publicly – immediately. I have written extensively in the past about what I believe Mr. Toyoda needed to do in order to improve public perception of the company his family founded and he runs. Appear Publicly – Multiple times, each and every day.

Brand JUUL - Can Public Relations Put This Back Togehter Again?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

In the public affairs campaign to move BigTobacco to cave was the contention that it was using marketing to motivate the underage to start smoking cigarettes. Here is a the copy of that complaint, filed on October 29, 2010. The serious investment matter is if public relations can put this brand back together again.  It's the season of the long knives, all pointed at JUUL.

2009 in Public Relations

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The year 2009 was a crossroads one for public relations.    Expect more brutal outings as client grouse that the PR folks can't get them publicity because they don't know digital. PR firms can more easily make the leap into 2010 if they analyze what social media firms are doing, how they are doing it, and what they are charging.

D2 Hawking AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS at Javits Center

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

As this PDF   informs, D2 has been hawking the book AMA HANDBOOK ON PUBLIC RELATIONS at the Javits Center.    "D2" is the moniker derived by me from the public relations agency Dilenschneider Group's association with D1, that is client Lou Dobbs.  Nice way to go into the weekend.

Public Relations: Why doesn't THE ECONOMIST like us?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

The publication either doesn't understand the discipline of public relations or just doesn't like it. In essence, the piece reduces public relations to spin, which incidentally is currently an out-dated way of referring to the business of influence.    Perhaps those at the publication who put together this piece were a bit too eager to get away on holiday and didn't invest the time and thought they should have.

Media Relations – If You Say It, It Will Run

Matt Eventoff

. Common Wisdom (Media Relations 101) - say something provocative, inflammatory or compelling during a television taping, it’s probably going to run. 2) Invest in media training and learning the intricacies of media relations. Call the reporter or producer and ask him or her to pull the segment, it will definitely run. .

Writers: Make Public Relations part of revenue mix

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

One of those sources of income can be creating content for the public relations industry.    And with social media strategy and tactics, the work that public relations agencies is doing is a lot of fun.    If you haven't hunted for assignments in public relations in years, time to check it out again.  It's a world in which more of us are earning our living from multiple sources of revenue.

Bob Dilenschneider's AMA HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC RELATIONS surges on Amazon.com

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

A solid book on the fundamentals of communications Bob Dilenschneider's AMA HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC RELATIONS has surged on Amazon.com.      Yesterday its rank was hundreds of thousands below where sales stand today.   Its initial slow start on the book market might have been that it was positioned as a primer on digital.    That's not what buyers seem to want.  As we

Public Relations: 80% top management male, 85% practitioners female

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Are we females in public relations [one of the hats I wear] branding ourselves all wrong? In PR NEWSER, Tonya Garcia reports  this: according to the Public Relations Society of America [PRSA], 85% of practitioners in PR are female but 80% of the top management are males.    A good new read for that is the 2010  book YOUR CAREER GAME by Nathan Bennett and Stephen A.

AMA HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC RELATIONS might grow long tail

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Sales  of Bob Dilenschneider's AMA HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC RELATIONS are steady.  The odds for this are high because public relations, unlike downsizing fields like law and journalism, is in a growth trajectory.  Who will be buying the AMA HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC RELATIONS  probably are small businesses which need to put together their own promotional programs mixing old and new media.

BP Crisis Communication, Pt II – 9 Steps

Matt Eventoff

Seven weeks later, there are three givens: 1) much damage is being done to the wildlife and ecosystem, 2) no one is quite sure when, or how, this tragedy will end, and 3) everything BP is trying to do from a public relations and communications angle just isn’t working. After seven weeks, all efforts should focus on action; the public’s appetite for communication is gone. At this point, the public is looking for heads to roll; 2.

BP CEO Bob Dudley, who took over for Tony Hayward , spoke earlier today at the Confederation of British Industry.

He may very well have deserved a break, but there should have been some thought put into taking the break publicly, at a prestigious sporting event. Toyota’s Crisis Communication – Hiding Doesn’t Work

Matt Eventoff

The company is not branded as Lentz Motor Sales — in all fairness to Mr. Lentz, customers, the press and the public want to hear from a member of the Toyoda family. Toyota is learning a lesson that numerous companies have learned the hard way – when a crisis strikes, and the media comes a knockin’, answer the door or suffer the consequences. Toyota may be an international powerhouse, however at the same time it is a family-based brand, the family being the Toyoda family.

Directing the message - Tiger finally speaks

Dahle Communication

Sadly, Tiger's representatives were adhering to the old-school philosophy of public relations: that they can control the message. Back in the day before social media and websites like TMZ.com , public relations was all about controlling the message. In my previous posts regarding Tiger Woods , I discussed how his NOT talking was hurting him. He was being quiet while the rest of the world was talking - and what the rest of the world was talking about was not good.

Will Obama use storytelling again with Elena Kagan?

Dahle Communication

Is being a jobless lawyer still superior to being a well-paid public relations representative?

Jane Genova: Speechwriter - Ghostwriter

Face it, the brand for public relations representatives is still not so hot.    Those who can't are fighting for public interest jobs and not doing well at that because they come across as the capitalist players they are, not those hell-bent protecting the public good.   So, why are members of Gen Y opting to be lawyers, not public relations representative?
